California - Northern

I actually already have a no-crow collar and thats why he is so quiet. To quote the Animal Control Officer I spoke to today while looking for advice, "Roosters are legal but the noise they make isn't." Hence why I'm looking for advice contesting it. He is now at or below the decibel level of most other neighborhood noise(cars honking, children playing, neighbor-the one complaining- talking on her phone on her porch at all hours, dogs barking, etc.) and according to the City Noise Ordinance, his crow is infrequent enough that he doesn't violate anything at all. He only crowed three times today.

So you see why I'm looking for advice. My neighbors are making unjust complaints, and I know I will need to fight them to keep my sweet rooster where he belongs, with his flock.

There are free decibel meters for phones. I would download one and measure his crow from the same distance a your neighbor's house. I would also measure and document normal neighborhood sounds (dogs, traffic, kids playing, etc.).

I went to your website. I'm in love with your Orps. But the minimum is too high. I personally am only allowed 7 hens where I live. Some of the 4h kids are showing my birds because it is their first year and the parents aren't wanting to build coops and get there own birds of the kids aren't going to continue. If you are willing to work on the minimums then we might be able to do business. Im interested in the Jubilee , Partridge, Lavender Cuckoo, and Mottled/Spangled Orps. I'm a little nervous about straight run due to the cost and not being able to have roosters in town, so I was wondering how hard is it to sex these colors as babies. Thank you for your time. also, your birds are beautiful.
Also, you are about 4 hrs form me, so a lot of driving and not sure how to transport chicks that far.

So, the chicks are MIA. The last info for the tracking # shows they've been in Sacramento since 1:30AM and no one can update me on their status. Even though the tracking says guaranteed delivery by 3PM today, that's clearly not going to happen. I'm furious. I now have to take a second day off work and I have no idea what condition the chicks will arrive in. I certainly want a shipping refund from USPS. Guessig Jeff will have to handle that. *grrrrr*
How frustrating! I am sure they will be fine if they get to you by tomorrow, having to wait and worry AND take more time off work is really the pits

Are the kids using them for showmanship? My SOP is from 1998 but none of the varieties were listed.

Decibel limits are usually lower early in the morning. To avoid problems then, you can try a Rooster box( a padded buy ventilated box that you put over him at night and remove after the time the decibel level goes up. You can also keep him in the garage each night and put him out in the morning.

Make sure the collar is tight enough too.

And give the neighbors eggs!

I would look up the exact ordinance. If it's just a noise complaint, I do know it has to be so many repetitions in a certain amount of time. Most dogs can't even fit into noise ordinance levels, and we all know how much they can bark. Noise generally is after 10PM. Good luck!

Hello, I don't know who you were directing this at, but I am going to be ordering 6 bantam Orps from Brandi's Fancy Feathers in Louisiana (no web page, but she has a Facebook page). She has a 10 chick minimum so I need to order 4 more, would you like to split an order and get some Orps? She has both bantam and Large Fowl. I am in Santa Clara in the Bay Area in case you are close by.

Or if anyone else close by wants to split an order, let me know, thanks!

my upcoming batch will be 4 NH over Amelia boys. They sure are good looking. Hard to tell in the picture but they are red cuckoo. This is them almost 2 weeks ago still clinging tight to the apron strings at 12 weeks.

sort of a late comment by this thread's speed of communication...
Has anyone else noticed the cockerels really hate to leave their momma?
Has anyone else found an early tell of "cockerel" to be that they like to settle in on their momma's back?
Sort of "king of the hill" at this phase...
I haven't noticed the pullets do that, only the cockerels...

Good! Really busy! September was crazy for shipping in the good chick shipping weather haha! Chickens are molting and some are coming out of their molt so hopefully everyone will be back up and laying. I just got the lights put in the new chicken "condos" and hope that helps them as well.

Does anyone have any pinta pinas for sale? Pairs or trios? I'm thinking about getting some, I just love them! I want to slowly move out of the orpington craze, they're making me crazy!!
I often admire your avatar - a jubilee orpington? Do you breed those? Would you continue to do so?
