i use either the ones at the feed store and put them on bricks (so they dont fill it with bedding) or once they are bigger a tupperware type container they hop into. Tall enough if they scratch they dont scratch it out but short enough to get in. Don't put it buy the heat or they will sleep in it
One of my peahens lays her eggs in their feed tray.

Anyone have advise on an interim feeder? The chick feeder is pretty much wholly inadequate already and in a week or two will be a complete joke. When they go to the coop/run, I'm planning on using a Grandpa's treadle feeder, but for the next 6 weeks or so, I need something to bridge the gap. I was thinking a couple of small gravity feeders might work (and then I could use them for grit and oyster shell in the run). Thoughts? Ideas?

Hi, I've enjoyed your baby chic adventure.
Tractor Supply has a bird feeder that I use with crumble for chicks.

It usually stays pretty clean and can be used for all crumbles as they grow i.e. starter, grower, high protein mixes when they are molting etc.
In my case, I also use them to feed my roosters a non-layer feed, which of course the hens like too.
For chicks, it can be helpful to put a small block ie paver next to the feeder if someone is small and wants a better angle.

As an interim feeder, I like the ceramic egg "cartons" which you can find at Home Goods or TJMaxx or just about anywhere lately.
The chicks can get at it from all sides and jump ontop, but they don't scratch as much out. They come in different sizes, not to mention colors.
And, of course you know what they are good for later!

That's so funny. I've got a 6-pack cardboard egg carton in there right now because I had to do SOMETHING and that's what I had in the house, LOL! I like this idea ...

I used a trough style feeder when I had more than 4 chicks. And whenever they could with the other feeders they preferred to spill the feed into the corn cob bedding and scratch around for it. In fact numerous times it would seem they were trying to dig a hole all the way to China through the bottom of the brooder box.

I made them a dust bathing station that they LOVE to dig around in (so far no actual dust bathing). You'd think there were buried mealworms in there or something rather than just a bit of chick grit, LOL!

Yeah the scratching instinct is pretty powerful. They even scratched the ground when they were feeding at the feeder. I wouldnt think they would dust bathe until they are more feathered. The down is only temporary. They are pretty cute I may have to drop by sometime to see them as you are probably on my way home from work.
