Speaking of enduring broodies,  I still have some bantam cochins that haven't left the nest box from their summer sit!  And a few that got out of the box for a few weeks, molted, fattened up a bit, and went right back in to the box.  Crazy birds!

My cochins just turned 5 months. I gave them an assortment of ideas for their nest box. Two? started laying this week. Do they like any of the nest boxes? NO! They pace and fret until I let them out of their pen.

They want a crate. A big crate. It's 48" x 32" and they think it's the perfect size- for ONE pullet.

My Del's took to the nest box right away (after I got them to stop sleeping in it.) I had golf balls in it for probably 2 weeks before they started laying though. Now whenever there is a traffic jam to lay we hear all about it.

Still haven't figured out how to get my porch sitters (the platform outside the coop at the top of the rap) to go back inside again.

Going to vent for a moment:

My custom coop is MIA. *grrr* Today was the rescheduled delivery date (it was supposed to be done two weeks ago) and I've not heard a peep out of the guy. He hasn't responded to my two emails from last week and hasn't returned my phone call from yesterday or today. I am beyond ticked off at them at the moment, and now I have to start the coop hunt from scratch and under the gun since the chicks are rapidly outgrowing their brooder. Ugh. *grrr* ARGH! And of course I can't find anything else that I actually like and that works in my space (which was the whole POINT of buying something custom). And even the less than ideal options are going to cost hundreds of dollars more and still require modifications when they show up. Did I say ARGH?
