I currently have all 3 roosters from last year with the layer & vacationing hens. The Rhode Island Red cock is the dominant one and my Langshan just stay out of his way. I haven't seen any fighting and there are plenty of girls to go around. They have an extra long horse trailer converted into a coop and several acres surrounding it to range in. I like having a few boys with the layers. There are 2 Great Pyrenees guardian dogs on the 10 acres with the livestock but I like having the boys watching over the hens, too. Last month, the 2 LGDs fought off and killed a coyote. So far, we haven't lost any of the birds to predators and the trailer flock free ranges during the day.
One of my breeding pens is housing my Langshan cockerels and 1 RIR cockerel. I've narrowed down my Langshan boys to 3 black, 1 blue, and 1 splash. I also have a younger black boy still here in town. He is doing his duty with the girls but not crowing yet. I also have my Pita Pinta cockerels in another breeding pen. I need to narrow them down from 9 cockerels to the best 3. I am hoping to set up one more breeding pen and a bachelor pen sometime in the next month.
