Glad to hear the chick is doing well

Originally Bag Balm was developed for milk cows with mastitis. It works well for infection and inflamed skin conditions. I think it was around three weeks before the sack completely hardened and dropped off. I have not used the Vetricyn but it sounds like it is working just fine.

Both will work.

The egg sack does not look infected so It is likely not Mushy chick disease.

Do you have the entire flock together when they are on winter vacation? Do you find that the roosters are competing for the hens and stirring up trouble?

Does anyone move breeding roosters back and forth between a rooster run? i.e. keep all the roosters together except when in a breeding pen?

As you might guess I've tried a few things and am still looking for a long term solution…or maybe there is no such thing as a static housing situation with chickens...
I currently have all 3 roosters from last year with the layer & vacationing hens. The Rhode Island Red cock is the dominant one and my Langshan just stay out of his way. I haven't seen any fighting and there are plenty of girls to go around. They have an extra long horse trailer converted into a coop and several acres surrounding it to range in. I like having a few boys with the layers. There are 2 Great Pyrenees guardian dogs on the 10 acres with the livestock but I like having the boys watching over the hens, too. Last month, the 2 LGDs fought off and killed a coyote. So far, we haven't lost any of the birds to predators and the trailer flock free ranges during the day.

One of my breeding pens is housing my Langshan cockerels and 1 RIR cockerel. I've narrowed down my Langshan boys to 3 black, 1 blue, and 1 splash. I also have a younger black boy still here in town. He is doing his duty with the girls but not crowing yet. I also have my Pita Pinta cockerels in another breeding pen. I need to narrow them down from 9 cockerels to the best 3. I am hoping to set up one more breeding pen and a bachelor pen sometime in the next month.

Just let me know if you want some help with this. I really enjoyed the Pita Pinta I ate the other day (my bird) so Im really thinking of breeding out some of my own.

Pita Pinta are very Tasty!

I hope to have a bunch next year too.

One Chick Two, I was expecting a picture of our OEGB's when I scrolled down. They are crowd pleasers when we have them in public but I can't speak to male temperament.

popping into your conversation - I had no idea OEGB's where so personable until I viewed some at a poultry show last fall. =)

Out of 40+ laying hens, i am getting ONE egg a day this week. Sheesh.
At least it is the UofA blues. :-)
Thanks @ronott1 !
You need some Pita Pinta! My Pita Pinta pullets and Pita Pinta mix pullets are cranking out the eggs. I have so many that I'm feeding them back to the girls.
