I was talking to my vet who said he doesn't work on chickens, but the family that owns the feed store in Modesto just had him put down their 17 year old rooster . I was impressed
That one would have beaten the oldest living chicken-- according to Guinness that is Matilda--Nearly 17 years old.

6 to 7 years old is the average. They start dropping at two though for sexlinks. We had some that lived to be about 10 and they did still lay eggs.

Yes mine are 6-7 . 17 is old, if that's the correct age, I've never come by.You never know how people can accurately keep track. But that's what he said. It was an old boy for sure though

I've had chickens close to 30 yrs., and many lived to be 10-12 years of age. During their senior years, they were laying an egg once a week or 10 days, and I always considered it as their gifts to me. I've had small number of hatchery chickens who were laying eggs daily, all year long, but, unfortunately neither one lived to be over 3 years old. I am happiest when they lay 3 or so eggs a week, stop laying while molting and during cold months to repair their tiny bodies. I love it when they live a long, full life : )

My first Rooster Ray was 11 give or take a couple of months on either side when he died. He was quite healthy up till about 2 weeks prior to his death. This is him the spring before he passed

This is his only off spring Norma Ray. She is almost two and has raised 16 chicks in the last 10 months.

She's no show bird but it's safe to say he passed on some nice genes!
