Anyone in the eastbay want this Silver Sebright. She wondered into our yard and has not left. We tried to find her owner but had no luck. I Live in San Leandro and they don't allow livestock so I have to give her away.
For all those worried about " … will my chicken ever lay an egg … "
This Welsumer is about 56 weeks old and laid her first egg today. She started an egg song in the fall, but stopped when the days grew shorter. Recently she started the egg song again, and then began squatting this past week.
Her comb and wattles remained small, but just started growing a bit larger. She has always been a slow, picky eater, but recently has become more enthusiastic about eating. She still doesn't compare to her buddies, who eat as fast as they can (while managing to stay a bit smaller), but now comes to dried mealworm snacks offered by hand (whereas previously, she might take them if offered by someone on the other side of a wire screen).
Wow...that is pretty old for a first egg. Timing seems to be a big factor with them. I had a couple of younger ones that started to look ready to lay right before the days shortened too, but the did finally lay in January.
Quote: I did that a couple of times when I first joined the thread too. It is easy to do if you are searching for something. The threads pull up but you don't always notice the date.
So I had an chick pip a strong hole in the opposite end.
What are the chances it will hatch.
Had one last week totally unzip and hatch at the wrong end, so I know it's possible.
Just wondering the odds.
The air cell is still in tact at opposite end
really?? Never heard of a broody eating her eggs. Interesting .
If she won't kill chicks I should have some I can give you. Gotta check what's hatching next

Over the years, I've had number of eggs pipping on the wrong end, and they hatched without any help from me. When they started to progress, often created a zigzag pattern. I know it is really worrisome to see the pip on the wrong end, but, I think the chick will be fine since it pipped, he is able to get air to breathe. I wish you best of luck, and don't worry.
Quote: I've had it happen before with a different hen but it was only only 1 egg. So maybe it got crushed & she cleaned up.
But this broody's by herself in a "maternity ward" - no one to blame but her.
Awww, that's really sweet. I got a mix of eggs from chiqita, mainly showgirls/silkies & a couple of seramas.
I am seriously craving to hatch a bunch (like 2 dozen) of seramas.
I think my next coop will be bantams only to give them their own space.
But lemme know what you hatch & we'll go from there.
