3 new babies this morning! 2 black sex links (BR hen covered by my wellie roo) hatched, 1 cockerel and 1 pullet, and a welsummer hatched late yesterday. 2 more wellies working their way out. My 2 broodies are very happy.

Some people want Broody chickens and some don't.

I love to see the Mom with the baby chicks.

Congratulations on all the new chicks......but what the heck do ya'll do with ALL those chicks you hatch???? I'm trying to figure out what to do with all the potential roos I'm going to get from the 20+ chicks I have!

With Halloween coming up I thought I'd share this deviled egg idea. We're going to have all 5 grandkids this weekend. My daughter and her husband are doing the Tough Mudder in Tahoe this weekend. I thought the kids would get a kick out of this.

That is a great idea! Olives and eggs, Yum.

If I had a Sportsman or one of the other large incubators I would be in trouble. I sell or give away what I can. I plan on trading off some of my older hens next spring at the Small Animal Exchange to keep my layer flock fresh.

I also process come of the cockerels. With these two hatches, I will probably keep some(I have two silkie eggs developing and I think two of them are Olive Eggers) and sell or give away others. If I hatch 20, then about 10 will be pullets and those are easy to re home.

Time to boil some eggs and get some black olives!

Hoping you get some answers. Has anyone said how long after they get it before you get the results?

No, I am not entirely sure.

The last time I dropped off one on a Monday and had the Initial report on Thursday and the Final report on Friday. This was during one of the heat waves, so I imagine they were busy.

Amy should have something from them tomorrow or Friday.

I'm on the Incubators Anonymous thread so they could talk me down (although I think they are all really just enablers).

I have two incubators full of eggs due on Oct 1st and 5th. My third incubator, 17 bobwhite chicks popped out today (so far).

When these three hatches are done, I'm turning everything off until Nov 11th when I get back from vacation

The shakes are already starting to set in

Other than for cleaning, this is the first everything will have been shut off since last December!!!

(Although I already have eggs ordered to arrive right after I get back).

I decided I already have so much for the petsitter to take care of, it was too much to ask for them to monitor humidity. And since I'm flying to Mexico, I can't really take the incubators along with me this time.

i'm now feeling really wimpy for being overwhelmed by having 15 chickens of various ages pecking around -- but i think someone is coming to take the three orps this weekend, so i'll be down to a dozen, all girls i'm pretty sure: 2 SPPRs, 2 marans, 2 light sussex, 2 cream legbars, 2 basques, one australorp, and one splash isbar -- age range from 15-3 weeks. what a gang!

time for a picture! or two! so i went down to the coop & set things up so the 5-week-olds can now explore outside the enclosure if they want to, but the big girls can't get in -- so far the littles are being quite wary, which is undoubtedly a good idea. but they are also quite interested in exploring, when the big girls were out free-ranging -- and i managed to get a few pictures (note, the new cream legbar & splash isbar are still in the brooder indoors):

baby (still the loudest chick) and the cream legbar amelia (named for Earhart, she's the best flier of the bunch)

baby -- this was the only chick i've been worried *might* turn out male, and still has a larger comb than elanor (despite being a smaller chick) -- but otherwise no sign of maleness, and such beautiful feathers!

Those are cute! I think the only thing I would change is to make the devilled egg out of quail eggs. Then you would truly only see a spider on the plate. Maybe add two tiny bits of red pepper/pimento as eyes.

I'm planning to make up a batch of quail devilled eggs to bring to work. I'd like to drum up a market for specialty eggs during the holiday season. There are people in the office that like to entertain. Devilled quail eggs with a few tiny bits of caviar on top, maybe pickle a batch in beet juice...

I always say it's like drug pedalling. Give 'em free samples and get 'em hooked on your product!

Signs of Maleness in Baby: lack of tail feathers, the light coloring starting to move into barring(See the barring on the bottom the right wing?) and bigger comb. Over the next week or so, the color will move more into the male pattern and the comb will get bigger. Also the Tail will start coming in with the gray and white pattern. Gray will start appearing in the body too. He will also catch up in size quickly.

aha, maybe Baby is a boy after all. i'll keep an eye on him... he's definitely light & almost no tail to speak of -- and it just seemed *too* lucky that both basques would be girls!

need help: we have 2 hens that hatched 6 babies. odd that 3 have already died noticed one this morning another one is not well. Then I noticed one hen she walks around then sits and closes her eyes, then walks again and sits and closes her eyes. cant catch. but now with 3 babies dying and another one iffy. Know I think it is something. I will see more when i get home from work. have to leave soon. any ieas for now? thanks
