Can i beat Ron to it?! send in the dead chicks to UC Davis and you should get some answers in a few days. the links are on the site in multiple places if you search the thread for necropsy.
Necropsy is free for backyard flocks and is great. The symptoms you describe sound like mites. Northern fowl mites will kill chickens. It could be anything, but mites are easy to check for.
Along with the carcus, send in a poo sample. They might test it for free with the Necropsy but if not it will cost you about $9.00 and will tell you if you have worms at your place.
Also, there is a Fedex account you can use to get a 70% discount on the shippint. Use Fedex. USPS is a terrible choice for UCD. You might want to send the samples to a lab that is closer.
Signs of Maleness in Baby: lack of tail feathers, the light coloring starting to move into barring(See the barring on the bottom the right wing?) and bigger comb. Over the next week or so, the color will move more into the male pattern and the comb will get bigger. Also the Tail will start coming in with the gray and white pattern. Gray will start appearing in the body too. He will also catch up in size quickly.
Elanor is going to be stunning!
Ron
i love it ron, you are so tactful with all your hidden messages! how do you even do that?
Still learning a lot about BYC. got reprimanded for putting my website in signature line. Didn't know that was a no no. Ha, learn something new every day.
There is an insert link on the edit bar that looks like a black box with a gray border and an arrow pointing down from the right frame. It inserts a spoiler.
Use the spoiler and put the link to the website in your sig line. I think that is ok with the rules here. If not, you can put the website link in you profile and them put the link to your profile into the sig line.

I also learned that if you pay many you can post more for sale ads and get rid of banners and all sorts of things! I've never been much of a read the details type guy so was good to learn more. pretty sure I can bring most questions to you though for a quick answer!
Egg-lady- do the necropsy! It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. If I do not get conclusive answers I may need to cull one of my sick ones and send it in fresh. Being in Redding - makes it not do-able to travel to send in a live one. So that's as good as I can get. I hope it is simple as mites- a treatment of Ivermectin would clear it up!
So:
Deb
try making tea eggs with the quail eggs ( goggle will be your friend here) they look AMAZING but you need the smoky tea, its not as good with earl gray, but still great. Very pretty and entertaining worthy.
egg lady:
So sorry about your chicks, I've got no idea, but moving them if you can and dusting for mites cant hurt. I think you might have to wash babies rather then DE? I vaguely remember DE being too tough on lungs for mini birds, but yymv. If you do wash them, they like the hairdryer to dry, since you cant just pop them back into the incubator and they chill easily.
Papa: Golden feather seems like ti would be worth it for you.A single sale wold more then pay for it, and you have a lot of rare eggs and chicks. crazypetlady does a lot of ebay if you want advice about that she might be able to help you too. Rachael is a sweetie.
Ron: I'm sorry only a few of those eggs are developing, I wouldn't think a day at the fair would have such a huge effect. aah well, if you need more let me know. Are you sure nothing is going on in the Marans eggs? I cant tell until they have chicks in them, and even them I have made mistakes, so I don't toss anything if its a dark egg. But you could have a better candler then me.
I had a whole bunch of babies hatch this week too! Its insane in here. I figured out how I got that partridge chick, because.. i got a whole bunch more. ginger was a busy boy before he left to live in Santa Cruz. He left me with 2 batches of red chicks ( guessing red is dominant over BBS) and the black girls were giving partridge . The chicks look buff, but I don't think they can be, they will get darker as they get older. Its always the quite ones you have to watch! Constance was sneaky about the hens too when I thought he was a she.
Moved the turkeys outside onto the covered porch with their little chicken buddies. I'm still afraid of putting them on the soil, so it s haul them in and out for a while, we will see how they take it. but they are getting too big for the office, so there has to be some plan. I am really starting to rethink turkeys. we will see....

Why so? We have been considering goose for meat and have had so many people go....ewww- do turkey! And with my luck with the chickens- all I can think is...heck no. They eat more feed, they prone to illness just like chickens (and obviously I am having issues here as it is with chickens) and are messy (from what I have read). But geese are messy too but they don't consume much feed at all (mine eat mostly grass like a horse). But I would love to hear why you would be rethinking turkeys since I am still in research mode. Yay for babies though!!
Still awaiting UC Davis contact. I have a 'sick bay' set up outside with my largest dog grate (3 feet tall, 4 feet long) and have 2 chickens in there. Sleepy (almost 14 week old tiny BCM pullet who is very thin, not thriving and is constantly half squinting, stands frequently looking very tired but still eats and drinks fine) and Wounded Knee (same age but bigger BO cockerel, who is very lean, twice the size of Sleepy but cannot seem to get around well. I think he was likely have issues before being dive bombed by some of the roosters but I think it worsened his problem with his legs). He also still likes to eat and drink and he pants a lot (Sleepy doesn't)...I think what has been REALLY weird about all my recent issues is how VARIED the symptoms are.
We do live in the country so we get deer, rabbits, wild mallards and canada geese, wild turkey and other critters in our backyard. The chickens range freely during the day- I suppose it's possible they picked something up from the wild creatures in the yard. Only buying birds from 2 (reliable sources- Debi excellent breeder and Ron) I don't think I can 'pin' it on them lol. I mean how many people have chickens from a zillion people (even you people here have chickens from other sources) with no where NEAR the issues I am having. Just SO odd!
So I nurse the sick chickens for now. So far in 2 weeks no new chickens seem stricken like these guys. I have 2 deaths total in those 2 weeks- plus 2 in sick bay right now (away from the flock). But no new ones- so hopefully that is a good sign?
