HELP PLEASE!! SICK RRX HEN. NEW AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
My Penny's side under her wing has a huge hole in it and her wing feathers are 1/2 gone on that one side. Am sending two pix I just took but it's late and dark out so hope you can see them okay. There is like black oozing out of this area all over. Is that blood??? She was sitting on the coop floor. She's very lethargic and I picked her up without a fuss or peep from her. I'm afraid she won't make it through til morning. Can anyone help me and tell me what this is? Is there anything I can do to help her? It's already 10:35 pm her. I'm in Bakersfield.M6 chickens are safe in the coop and only free ranged less than an hour today bc it was 104° here and still 102° at 9:30 p.m.

One of my hens was attacked by a hawk once and it looked very similar to that. I took her to the vet and he stitched her up, and I gave her antibiotics for a week. She made it through fine, no problems. She was acting normal the whole time even though it was a huge gash; I didn't even know she was hurt until I picked her up and happened to look under her wing.

Good luck; I hope yours pulls through ok!

Thank you for your advice but I'm sad to tell you that our Penny did not make it through the night. At further examination, she had a hole the diameter of an egg under her wing on her side. It was clear through to the insides. Would a rat be capable of doing that to a chicken? It was like something put a hole saw on her and quickly drilled out a perfect hole. There was dark dried blood on her yesterday but very little and no signs of scuffle at all;ie, feathers anywhere, pool of blood... This is all extremely puzzling to us. I checked the coop for possible predator areas but there was nothing- no rat droppings, tracks, nothing. We do have tree rats here that we see out in the farm area occasionally, but they are usually after the rabbit pellets. No sign of snakes around either. There's nothing we can do now for Penny, but I'll be watching the rest of them carefully now. Oh and another weird thing is that yesterday morning Penny gave us an egg so we think she was fine then.
