What does everyone think, normal size hens, do they prefer a 2x4" on its side to roost on, or a round oak branch smaller or larger?

Depends on the hens. My Silkies are pile-on-the-floor roosties and will cuddle in the nestboxes. They will use the perches during the day but at night they cuddle in the nestboxes - I don't mind - better than on the floor where they might get pooped on. My larger hens used to sleep in our old little coop nestboxes. But since I got the new Barn Coop I decided to set up a 2x4 plank for them. The silly girls preferred the rounded-edge 2x2 perches that came with the coop. Now, we never forced our birds to sleep in any particular place. The LFs used to sleep in the old coop nestboxes and when they all were transferred to using the new Barn Coop they didn't pick the nestboxes, but chose the rounded-edge perches. The 2x4 was ignored. Hey, as long as the girls are happy where they sleep, I'm happy! We have only 4 chickens so the arrangement works for us. I've seen owners use round natural branches, 2x2 or 3x3 rounded-edge perches, 2x4 planks, nestboxes, etc. The chickens pick the spots they like no matter what you put up. Experiment and see what they like. I personally believe in lots of space for chickens and that way there's no squabbling as they settle for the night. Our two Silkies head straight for a nestbox while our two LFs each go to a window seat perch.

The new Barn Coop has a rounded-edge roost pole under each window and the two LFs each get a "window seat."

During assembly -- 5 roosting perches came with this Barn Coop. 3 roosting mounts are seen below the windows with 2 more roosting mounts above the windows for more perches. We only needed to mount 2 perches (one under each window).

Our old little coop where the Silkies and the LFs all slept in the nestboxes. It had a 2x2 perch that was only occasionally used.

Mine seem to prefer the manzanita branches I put in, about 1.5-2 inches in diameter. Also the 1" wooden dowel. I've also found that more birds seem to roost on the 2x4s when they are put in with the wide side up.
I agree with the wide side up!

Ugh. Thought we were over this.

Somebody broke into my workplace again on Monday and Tuesday nights, the 4th & 5th. They took one bird each night. The security cameras showed two men, one of whom was very heavyset. He was the one who actually climbed over the fence. The coops were padlocked but being chain link they simply disassembled a side panel and crawled

If you are in the El Dorado County and specifically Placerville area and see either of these birds please contact me ASAP.

"Mama" Silkie hybrid. Has damaged leg scales due to severe leg mite infection in the past.

"Howard" Golden Polish. Sits on his hocks a lot. Can be aggressive toward small children and short people.

Quick question... Is citrus good for chickens? I was told it is bad for chickens, but I cut oranges in half and my chickens love them. Rae

It shouldn't hurt them but most do not like it. Some say it affects calcium absorption but I think it would take a significant amount to do so.

Thank you.

It seems that excessive citrus or vit C can cause feather-picking. I Googled "citrus fed to chickens" and several sites came up with their opinions on citrus (and some other no-no foods). Sounds like the jury is still out and I haven't found any actual research articles. My hens won't touch citrus because it is sour. I don't know about chickens. Supposedly read an article that chickens can't taste sugar, yet they love the sweet fruits like banana, cantaloupe, blueberries, and watermelon. They won't touch strawberries or citrus. I don't give them anything with onions, onion powder, or onion salt. Apparently avocado is ok if not the peel or pit. Best thing is to always have their balanced feed available for them at all times for their best health.
