Just had a chick taken by a hawk. Everyone watch out for hawks this time of year!

Awww... what a bummer! So sorry! Yeah we have hawks around here all yr. That's why we have chicken wire over the top of the open run area. My birds unfortunately can't free roam. Our dog would kill them and we don't have fence high enough to keep them in our yard.

Anyone grow fodder for their chickens. I'm trying to cut my feed bill some. I'm currently running about 100lbs a week with about 32 birds.

Im currently using about 5 (2qt scoops of food a day) 3 in the morning and 2 in the evening. I feed it as a wet mash sometimes I can get away with no feed in the evening because the dishes are not empty or I have kitchen scraps enough.

My plan for fodder is to just do the feed in the morning and give them the fodder in the evening.
Im just wondering how much to grow/feed per day. Im thinking approx 2-4 sqr feet per day should be good for 30 birds.

I really want to start doing it, but right now i don't have many chickens, so my feed is probably a lot cheaper than yours! 5 scoops of feed would probably last me a week and a half!

Aww so sorry for your loss.. :( we've had crows out like crazy. Never seen any where we live so definitely strange..

Consider the crows a blessing. They chase away hawks because they sometimes prey on their young. I haven't lost any birds to hawks or even seen any in the area since I started feeding the crows and encouraging them to hang around.
