California - Northern

Me too. We spent almost 200 dollars on chicks from mpc. We were pretty bummed.

it really does add up! the shipping alone is estimated at $60 (to CA) but with postal rates going up nearly every year it's probably going up!

I estimated the fuel use to drive to Norco (Golden Waves Silkies) and it's estimated at $30 round trip for our Prius, so about 1/2 the shipping cost. chicken road trip! :) I wish we could get some now (they have some lovely little white silkies available) but it's going to be so crazy over the holidays, so spring will work better.

Norco's Amber Waves Silkies will give a tour of their facility by appt -- they have other livestock besides Silkies but bearded Silkies seem their prime feature and in all the accepted colors. Available colors vary month to month so I keep their website bookmarked for updates on availability. I'm sure they'll take advance orders too but I like to select the bird in person when it comes to Silkies -- they vaccinate for Marek's, are NPIP too. We will make a day's vacation to travel to Norco for pickup when we are ready for future pullets. It would be nice to have a young Silkie DNA-pullet instead of waiting 3 or 4 months for a nearly full-grown female bird and miss all that chick-bonding time. I have had good luck so far with USPS-shipped large fowl but I don't rely on USPS with the more delicate chicks or hatching eggs.

Cackle Hatchery ships for free if you order 15+ chicks. even to Cali.

Oh yes, you're right, I'm sorry I didn't mean to post wrong info. They charge an extra $20 for less than 15. They call it a small batch fee or something like that. So I just ordered 15 to save the extra 20 bucks.

Looks like I have only 2 definite pullets out of my remaining 11 chicks. They are almost 5 weeks old & almost all of them have pink combs. Anyone want an EE cockerel? Some of them are really beautiful. I have 3 frizzled blue, 1 smooth blue, 1 smooth black, 1 chocolate, and also a cuckoo Marans/ Orpington cross.

Sorry to hear you only got two pulleys. Not very good odds.
