Anyone else getting hit really hard by this storm? My main coop keeps flooding and I've been out there all day digging trenches and hanging tarps. Sadly still lost three of my youngest - they were eight weeks but they were the runts of my last hatch of the season and they were apparently getting kicked out of the coop by the big banties. Almost lost a fourth but she's in my incubator warming up right now. It's close but I think she'll make it.

I am sorry to hear this!

We have not been hit that hard with rain this time. The storms moves south of woodland.

My coop is up on 2 foot posts resting on cement stones. It has never flooded from the bottom. The roof has leaked before but I fixed that a couple of years ago. It was leaking at the peak because one side of the roof goes up.

So sorry you lost your babies, we flooded but not bad. Just very wet

it really does add up! the shipping alone is estimated at $60 (to CA) but with postal rates going up nearly every year it's probably going up! I estimated the fuel use to drive to Norco (Golden Waves Silkies) and it's estimated at $30 round trip for our Prius, so about 1/2 the shipping cost. chicken road trip! I wish we could get some now (they have some lovely little white silkies available) but it's going to be so crazy over the holidays, so spring will work better.

I would think those silkies will be better quality.

Looks like I have only 2 definite pullets out of my remaining 11 chicks. They are almost 5 weeks old & almost all of them have pink combs. Anyone want an EE cockerel? Some of them are really beautiful. I have 3 frizzled blue, 1 smooth blue, 1 smooth black, 1 chocolate, and also a cuckoo Marans/ Orpington cross.

Oh we had that same luck. We had almost 20 roosters from hatching. I found most homes but there are still 4 left. On the poultry 530 site their is a lady who has a rooster rescue. All she asks for is a bag of feed per rooster. That's our plan for the last 4.

That's so rough. We got hot hard too. Our fence blew down and we sprung a leak in the roof of our coop. Totally sucked...

If chickencoops.blogspot.com has a YouTube or video showing how the cute coop looks with chickens inside that would be a plus. I didn't buy a coop until I found a manufacturer who had videos showing features of their coop and video on how to assemble it. There are so many things to consider in buying a coop other than $$$. How much open ventilation is there for @chicken (1 sq ft @chicken), does the cross ventilation hit the roost perches, 4 sq ft floor space needed @chicken because chickens poop a LOT, ease of cleanup, will it need sheltering from weather elements, etc. Unless you have a real-live-touch-&-look at a coop or at least videos of it inside and out, it is hard to determine if it will meet your needs. I searched for at least 2 years before buying a coop that I was looking to have certain features -- ease to assemble or disassemble and had heavy duty wheels to move around the yard if needed. Cove Products had a lot of videos showing not only how to assemble their coop models, but how each of the optional accessories work with the coops. Below are the links to our particular model Barn Coop and we happened to need a coop that could be easily assembled/disassembled and/or rolled around the yard. Each chicken owner has to decide what will work for them but those were our particular wants. One thing I discovered is that no ONE coop model will meet all your needs/wants so you have to decide what features you can or can't live with. Our coop still had a couple minor things we didn't like but overall has the majority of features we needed. Additionally, we built a patio roof over our coop to keep it cooler in summer and out of the rain in winter.

Ventilation was woefully lacking in the Barn Coop model so we opted to get an additional floor tray with kennel wire mesh for hot summer months.

After battling a dirt floor in my first coop I went with a cement slab and patio roof over our next coop. I got tired of tarps and canopies over the first coop! There's plenty of dirt in the backyard for the chickens to scratch in when it's not raining! Wish you could send some rain our way -- we're going to be up to 100o again by next Wednesday!!!

I love you coop. We built our own but are going to need a new one for our silkies. You should send me some detailed pics so I can make my husband build me one lol. It would be perfect.

Hey all. Just found out my free range flock has lice. Poor baby's. I think I found a good site on treating it but it wasn't clear on everything. I'm not going to use DE. Figured spinosad but unsure where to get it. Also saw ivectin can be used. Any suggestions for a free range flock of about 20? Also should I treat my other chickens that aren't free range who are kept seperate in coops? Thanks.

Make sure you get the concentrated spinosad.

Ok thanks. I'm going to use the ivermectin. Found directions online. Is the sheep stuff the same as the cattle? This just seems like an easy option and since we have so many birds I can apply it when the roost at night.
