In our backyard the straw gets tiresome to clean as it flies everywhere in the wind but still I like it best for our situation and occasionally I throw smaller pieces w/chicken poop into the compost pile for the garden beds.

Its already cut some of the smell.

Agreed - and the hens like to throw it over themselves in the nest. I like the way the straw absorbs the wettest of poops to easily pick them during cleaning.

Haven't been on here in quite a while, but thought I would pop in and congratulate @casportpony on having the "Featured" post on the Facebook version of BYC this morning with her Peafowl! When it popped up I said to myself...."Hey! I know that person!!!!"

It was 22 here this morning with freezing fog. I lost 2 quail yesterday, I quess they didn't want to go inside.

Just up the way In Patterson and way too cold for us here too. My Hens were out and about getting the blood pumping early though and looking for whatever's moving on the ground. This afternoon they are out of the sun side of the house eating greens and more bugs.

help me please my birds are sick! iam a new chicken owner of a small flock of chickens no younger then a year 1/2. They obviously have vent gleet from dirty pond water they got into. ( i also have a duck that makes the water dirty fast. he needs separated or a new home) I dont know if its fungal, bacterial, or parasitic vent gleet. My question is can i use nystain (which is for fungal) and tylam or teramyacin all at the same time to treat bacteria and fungus infection? And has anyone heard of using NON ACTIVATED OXINE AH for curing all types of vent gleet??

Vent gleet is usually a digestion problem. You can use monistat 7 to treat it.

One idea would be to take the sickest one in to UCD for a necropsy. They will euthanize and test to find out what it has and will make recommendations for treatment.

They charge now--I think it is $20.00 but nystain is expensive! and the test is a great tool for treating the flock.
