Which Brinsea incubator do you have? I'm thinking about selling my GQF cabinet hatcher and my Brinsea Octagon 20 and then purchasing a Brinsea Ovation 56.

Oh, you should totally sell your Brinsea Octagon 20. TO ME!!!!

I have an ocatagon 40 ex advance. It is not a current product(brinsea does not sell it anymore). I started a thread for the new ovation models and they are working out great for folks so far.

Get the one with the built in humidity pump.
Just finished reading the thread. I've thought about getting a GQF Sportsman but I really don't need one that holds that many eggs. My GQF cabinet hatcher works great for incubating except that I need to manually turn the eggs. It is great at holding both temp and humidity levels. But I don't need to run something that big with only 40 eggs in it. So my cabiinet is way too big for my needs and my Brinsea Octagon is too small.

@PetRock , congrats on your 7 year badge!
Thank you!!! That means that my oldest hens are 7 yrs old. I started that first year with 1 then added 3 then added 3 more! I had a keen understanding of chicken math even though I was a newbie to raising chickens. Of those first 7 chickens, I only have 3 girls left: Memly a Barred Rock, Omelet a Golden Sex Link, and Precious a Black Australorp.

Is anyone on this thread interested in breeding Pita Pinta? There are so few of us breeding this fantastic breed and I would like to help anyone who is serious about breeding them to get a start. I am currently hatching chicks and will have culls available in a few months. I also have fertile eggs that can be shipped within CA. Here are a few pics of my flock:

I'm still learning all this stuff! what I have no knowledge of doesn't make me innocent, so thank's for all this good advice.. and.."praise report" little Jeanette's
foot isn't broken after her entrapment mishap. I slept with that prize winning easter egger all night. she seems ok today! I love my birds!!!

Got some more progress done on the run. Roof went on, framing almost complete, and hardware cloth starting to go on. Also, the chicks are getting so big. They are now starting to grow some wing feathers and it looks like they are starting to grow tail feathers. They will be a week old on Monday. When should I start giving them some grit and sod? Also, what about treats such as worms and black flies?

I usually wait till about 2-3 weeks before treats and be sure they get grit first. I usually introduce them to some sand/dirt first. Let them scratch through it for a day or so.

Just another reason to love my Pitas

Those are not her chicks she has never been broody and is only approaching a year old now.

She watched over these 18 chicks and was so calm and patient with them. She was patient with all the people wanting to pet her and the chicks. The fence was less than 18 inches tall and she could have easily escaped but never made a move to do so. Little chicks would come up to her and she would just look at them She would peck the ground and they would follow her she never made a move against them or anything.
