California - Northern

The resident hawks raise a clutch in a tree at the back corner of my property every year, probably 30 feet behind my chicken compound. They (parents & youngsters) circle all the time. It really sets off all my birds with the hawk alert sound (very distinctive). I've even had the hawks perch directly above them and sometimes on the framework to the runs.

Fortunately, all my runs are completely covered, so as of yet I've suffered no aerial attacks.

Sorry about your chick.

Is anyone going to go see the Reno show, for the day? I'd like to go, but don't like that drive.

Cali, sorry for the loss of the chick. I've heard that hawks migrate this time of year. I've only had 2 losses to hawks (10 years apart) and they were in Autumn. My theory is that the resident hawks leave my chickens alone, but the migrating hawks don't.
Interesting....maybe I heard this from you, capayvalleychick (about the autumn). It totally makes sense (or is it 'since'). Anyway, I just wish I knew what happened.
When is the Reno show? And, I'm assuming it is a poultry show.

I ask because my husband (and I) are going to a big gun show in Reno on November 16th or 17th. I wonder if we could go to both, how fun that would be!

We could both drool over our passions and spend money we shouldn't spend!

what wormer works the best?
wazine or valbazen ? can any of these go in there water or do you have to chase them all down at night and give it to them.
I may do it before I let them out in the morning so I can catch them in the coop and put them out when done. I try to be as natural as possible. I know worm guard is good for preventing but not stoping. I saw a dead small white worm in the pooh. It may of been from of the new chickens I got that had been recently wormed. no one is acting funny or anything but am thinking I need to worm everyone.

Wazine only kills roundworms. I've used valbazen and have been very happy with it. Here's a great thread on worming with it:

I did the natural remedies and they didn't work. My flock got worms and they were really dropping weight. I've used valbazen the past 2 years - it's very easy to put in a medicine syringe and squirt down their throats. Pull on their wattles and their mouth will open. It kills all worms, including tapeworms. (which are the hardest to kill)

I'm using Ivomec this year because I have been battling lice in one of my flocks - I've managed to get rid of it from one coop, but the buggers are persistent in the other coop, despite my best efforts. Ivomec is a topical wormer - it kills everything but tapeworms. It even takes care of gapeworm. It also kills mites and lice. I also don't want them to develop an immunity to the valbazen, so it's good to switch around on wormers.

I worm once a year in the fall. Some areas need it more regularly, but it has worked well for me. I've already wormed my one flock and am waiting for egg production to drop a bit more before I worm the other flock.

Boy Ron, you are a busy guy with all this hatching!

I have eggs in my bator as well - from Trisha. They are set to hatch Thursday.

I did have my incubators put away but am so happy to have them going again! I should pack them back up after these hatche, but the New Years Day Hatch is coming up and I am getting more Heritage RIRs from Ron Fogelly in January. They will be F-4s and he said they will be even better.

thank you both...
is it as affective in the waterer? Than with putting it down there throat.
you mention topical on the ivomec. so you put that on there feathers like a chicken acne cream.

I've used valbazen orally and zimecterin gold (ivermec/praziquantil) paste orally. I dose each bird individually. It takes more work, but I know it's done right. Both are supposed to get most worms including tapes. The zimecterin gold could also treat lice/mites at the same time. These are more expensive, but saves $s on feed in the long run.

On a creepy crawly side note, they are approving a type ivermectin paste to use on humans (for kids too) to treat head lice. Just thinking about lice makes me itch...as I have kids in school. We've been lucky so far

and the kids haven't gotten lice yet. But, I do wash their hair with a shampoo with tea tree oil in it...something lice hate.
