California - Northern

I have heard of these. They are similar to the Basque, but are cold hardy. I do not know if they are heat hardy. They are a bit more auto sexing than the Basque, but the basque are actually easy to figure out by color too. The ones Laura has followed the rule, even though the comb and wattle was slow to come in on the little Roo. The males are darker, looking a bit orange on the head. the females are lighter. There is also a difference in the wing colors because of the Barring gene.

EO Basque are here now and a lot less expensive to get going with.

You are talking me into it, Ron! And I was determined to only hatch SPPRs and Langshans from the farm this year.

can spend more time fortifying the chicken compound. Getting ready for the new chicks that Ron is hatching and make room for the layers to get back into free ranging within the chicken yard.
I am going to keep my crele's and Empordanesa hens locked up but the rest are hopefully be free again.

I wonder how long it will be before the Dooms Day Preppers catch on to them.

We have friends who are very into prepping and have just starting raising chickens. I may have to recommend this breed to them. I shared a few of our LF pullets with them and someone else gave them an assortment of younger birds. I think that over half of the younger birds are bantams. Not the best choice for meat or eggs!

Quote: Mine were hatched from shipped eggs. Out of 15 eggs, I hatched 11. 13 went into lockdown with only 2 clears. Even with shipped eggs, this was one of my top hatches ever!

On the Dooms Day Prepper show the Preppers and the experts analyzing their plans do not take the breed into consideration. I guess they think a chicken is a chicken.
