Hey Jeff!
Man its been a rough day. The hoop coops are DONE!! They are totally destroyed and a few of them are in pieces. It's a mess. I had to pack the 2 new coops with chickens and put chickens in the garag
Im feeling kind of discouraged! :(
I have to figure something out by tomorrow, have to try and find a few spare coops I could pick from people. The guy who's building my coops said he won't
have the next 2 ready for another week. So its gonna be a interesting week.
How's the baby doing? Getting big already I bet ;)

Hey Mike, sorry to here about your Hoop Coop. :(
This time of year is very hard. Try not to get to discouraged...
Really like your new coops.

And your new chickens...beautiful!

Thanks guys. We only have a couple more days. I'm sure I can get through this. If anyone has or sees any coops for sale please let Me know.

Trisha I'm glad your power is back on. That's one thing I have been dreading, is the electricity going out. Thankfully it hasn't yet.

I moved that Barnies into the new coop. They love it! Gotta keep those precious babies safe!

Bustelo time!

Your chickens are all okay, though? We did not get as much wind where we are here in the Bay area but it still blew some things around in my yard. My chickens are not straying far from my covered run so far today. I think that they know that there is more rain to come. I hope that you are able to find some coops for your flock.

This thing does move fast and hard to keep track of post. It seems like with this weather we are having , having Brody hens is almost non existing. I'm intereste in making a homemade incubator and have started to post on the incubating section does anyone have success with homemade incubators ?
I have two Genesis 1588 incubators. You can get a still air from a feed store and add a fan to it. Those use a wafer thermostat and are a bit hard to get a steady temp. There are threads on BYC devoted to getting the best hatch out of them.

As for making one, Sac Craig's list has a home made one for sale. It is made out of an ice chest and is an incubator, hatcher and brooder.

Cherylcohen and Shanshan51 from Vacaville have made them out of cabinets!

Here is a link to a post from a guy that makes his own. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/726540/hatcher#post_10006122

Maybe send a pm to see if he will help you.

Hatching is addictive, so you might want to join the incubators anonymous thread...actually they are enablers....

Bummer about the hoop coops but I'll bet if you stick another roost in the new coops they'll all be fine in those until you get more. Good timing on the two you got anyway. It was crazy windy all night. Woke up to stuff all over the property! Our new rubbermaid box for wood completely fell apart!

Trisha, glad you have power, ours went out long enough to have fix the clocks!
I'm assuming new comers get pushed to the side on her. Since questions just get ignored seems like tere are only a hand full of CA back yard chicken breeders
Welcome Americangame, what questions didn't you get answered because I think you got some nice comments and even someone offered to incubate your eggs for you. The thread does move fast, maybe you missed the comments. Very friendly people here, I think you'll like it.

so let me ask all you..

is it normal to vaccum your dog ?
so I am cleaning up the house. My wife has a photography client coming over tonight. Noticed some loose hair on Baxter my lab.
so got him with the small attachment with the milder suction.
he seemed to like it so I continued to clean him up too.

I am sure sure that solidifies my red neck status.
Lets recap...
Live in the sticks , have beer cans and wire over the chicken coops, empty plant containers stacked up to keep the chickens in the coops and now vaccum my Dog...
I feel right at home already! bahaha!

Hi Northern Ca Folks!

I am going to try to answer a couple of posts that may have been missed.

Mike: Those SA Ducks that Amy is getting sound awesome! They are described as a super Dual purpose Duck with great meat and great egg laying. Also they are supposed to be very hardy.

Jeff: Yes, having a Baby at home is a great experience. It was weird getting the Birth Certificate. We were asked what the emergency was that kept us from getting the Hospital. Don't forget to get the Social Security card for taxes this year.

Laura: Hope your cats are not too depressed with the rain. Maybe let them out anyway?

Deb: Same thing here with hatching. I am so happy that this thread is taking off like it is. One thing I missed after the Easter hatch was the community it built up.

Kim: Did Paul make it ok finishing the roof in the rain in Chico? I hope he is home now.

CaliChck and Amy: You can't go wrong with Rocks! They were Americas Homestead breed for a reason after all. Partridge and Silver Penciled are great options and have a bit better feed conversion because they are a bit smaller. They are all so friendly too.

As a reminder, these are my two Partridge Rocks:

WOO! Multiquote finally worked!
Welcome new people!
Silkies were bread as pets as well as meat chickens for a looong time iirc. Think they were the court chicken? I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I sold a bunch to a girl who does animal therapy in hospitals, she wanted a therapy pet that would also do something. She said they were recommended to her at school.

But really I think its because they cant see anything so they cant run :D
Exciting! Celtic does have wonderful ducks. I don't know appleyards but you seem to have had enough types to know where they want! I don't envy you baby ducks however, they are cute as pie but the messiest things on earth.
My girls don't mind if they are sleeping somewhere different, as long as the other things are mostly the same. Having all their friends around and the same area outside will go a long way to not stressing them out.
I didn't get notices all day from BYC. But I did get my feed coupon!

Here is My chicken story f the day.
I hatched a zillion chicks this week and have 1.5 broodies on them ( one broodie is only willing to sit on them at night, nothing else, she broke being broody they day they hatched but she is still mildly interested) So I have the brinsea in there after one chick got crushed under poor sparkles because everyone was trying to get under her.

Sparkles has a long history as a chick stealer. So, she has become upset with the brinsea. Today when I got home a lot of chicks were taking a nap under it. She started clucking to them but only a few came over. SO she went to go sit on top of the brinsea. the chicks that were originally under her were all like "......."

Of course then she saw them and decided that was a bigger pile and went back. She is my most amusing broody. This is her 4th time since I got her in may.

Scalpie is doing better. She is clearly healing because she is itching like crazy. She looks so funny with her dome exposed and only feathers around her face. Once my phone is back if I can figure out how to hide a picture link is spoilers ill post it, its still a bit freaky looking to just post.
Yes we brooded 20 last Spring. Oh goodness! It was craziness! This time I am only doing 8 and I am good for the year with ducks until I decide how to balance my male to female ratio (add more females duh right!).
My flock gets pumpkins because they are good for them and they like them, but I know from experience that they don't keep your birds worm free.
Cooper............you are close. Any cars that don't run in your yard?
I have cars that don't run in my yard! haha

Hi! If you scroll back a bit you will see several people responded to you. :)
Im definitely thinking about getting them off the ground i called the builder v(Jeremyb) Today andd told him about all of the ideas so hes going to requote me and let me know how much extra all of the upgrades will be He said the hardware cloth is only and extra $50 bucks
I should have thought about this before he built them. I hate not being one of those people who think about every angle. I usually learn from my mistakes lol.
Her setup is soo nice! I talked to the builder today and asked him about buck n run ranch and he told me about how she customized the coops.
He charged her an extra $250 per coop to have them elevated like that. And he also said he put linoleum on the floors. I want to do something similar with my coops in the future but um gonna have to cut a few corners for the moment.
Thank you for sending me that link to your friends coops. I'm glad I have that picture in my head because I can still do something like that in the future!
What Kind of sheep are you getting next?
It is really getting intense outside. I think we might be up to around 60mph gusts.
The rest of the fence in the backyard came down.

I'm sorry about you roo Amy. Which one was it?
Oh yes I'm sure they are around here somewhere. Hopefully they keep their distance like they have been doing.
Can you eat Appleyards? They just sound like good!
Hi Len!
Sorry I haven't introduced myself yet.
Im Mike from Anderson. I'm new to chickens but I've jumped in head first!
It's funny you said that about their vents. Today one of my Gold Laced Brahmas had her vent in the wind and it looked really nice and healthy!
Just one of the roosters I didn't 'want' to keep so I am actually ok. Hope that doesn't sound too mean. :|
