That's a nice coop plan!

I agree!

You see those not cut in half on craigs list, we have one we store water in in the backyard. If we do a big aquaponic garden in the side yard next year I will use those for the floating beds. you have a big one for the fish, then use a waterfall down to the vegetable beds so they can clean the water and grow. You can do a 2 or 3 tier system. They are BEAUTIFUL set up. ...

Anyway, they show up cheap on occasion. We got ours from a pure aquaponics place ( you all know what the most popular product is in those) that was moving out of San Fransisco. Got a lot of wood we used for coops too! Had to let it sit for about a month and explain to our neighbors about the smell, lol. But they show up on CL fairly frequently, Id only imagine they would be more common up your way.

You used to be able to find them cheap, but thanks to those *aquaponics people*

, now you can't get them for under $100!
I really would like to have a few, so if anyone sees them, for less money, let me know!

I have wanted to raise tilapia and use the water the way you describe. Do you have pics? Sounds awesome.

Tilapia are illegal to buy now. We still have some however so if you do get a set up let me know. Ours are on the garage atm because of the cold. They grew very slowly this year so we will be working on our setup.

We don't have the big set up now they were just in a 350 gallon tank and we had 2 beds one of a tube and one over the tank. I'll say more when I'm not typing on my phone.

Do you have a Craigslist app on your phone? You can program it to look for stuff that is how we got ours.

in case anyone is interested, i've written a few pieces recently for one of the local papers -- one op-ed of sorts, which now the fourth thing you find when you scroll down on this page:
http://www.westmarincitizen.com/index.php/home/drakes_bay_oyster_company_/

and if you keep scrolling down, you'll find a "conversation" of sorts when one of the pro-wilderness folks responded to my op-ed with a letter, i responded to that, got another response to THAT, and i wrote one more piece after that.

and working this evening on a brief comment about the decision from last week... with another bit of rain moving in!

Anyone here ever use the corrugated plastic or metal roofing to cover their coop?
What tool do you use to cut it properly?

yes, my coop has corrugated poly-somethingorother plastic (white - lets light in but not direct sun), and like Ron, i think we also used metal snips to cut it...
i think i've posted this photo before, but here it is again to see the roof in action -- and it totally stood up to the nasty wind we had sunday!

Yes, Mary (The Sheriff) has 4 Emu's. (2 males, 2 females) Kathy has 1 named Fred. (Wilma had to be put down)

I have been around them when I visit Mary - they are roughly a year old now. They are very territorial - they did fine with her existing chickens, but she had to separate them from the chickens because they would try to stomp and kill any new babies. You have to be extremely careful around them with ANYTHING shiny. (especially jewelry) They love the little metal buttons on my jeans. They are super fast runners, but cannot stop quickly, so you need to give them room to run.

If you look through the Stella's Social club thread, you'll see lots of comments about them.

How does your run stay dry? Because I have serious dry envy right now. My silly chickens were out in the rain today looking like absolute drowned rats. Sopping wet.

Why are they illegal? That's too bad, I was hoping to raise them someday when/if I can get a set up for them. Thank you for the offer. I don't know if I can get what's needed for them.

I'd love to hear more about your experience with them and see photos when you are on a computer instead of a phone. You could send them to my email if the group is not interested.
