I put Dry Den on the floor (not in the laying boxes, for certain!). How long it breaks down depends on how busy your birds are. On the bag it says you can add some water for a start, and as the animal moves around it will break down and the water will evaporate.

Add shavings with it when it's rainy, like Amy said, it gets clumpy and gross!

I love dry den, i have never used it for the chickens but used it for my Mini horses. Are you just filling the pens with the pellets? How long is it taking to break down.

I know you're asking him but this Summer I was using it in the chicken coop and I flat out loved it. It smelled wonderful for much longer than the shavings. It looked tidier for longer. I had about 16 chickens in the coop with it and it would go more than 2 weeks without much from me. For an 8x8 space I needed at least 2 bags for a thin layer- I liked thick though and did 3 bags. After that I just stirred it around and tossed a bag on as needed. Once every other week maybe? Only the coop though- not the run for me. Same thing for the ducks. I basically have a 10x10 for the ducks and use 6 bags when I do a full change. Then add a bag or two every 2 (sometimes 4) weeks or so...with the rain it's more often. I refresh with pine though...I usually dump out the lay boxes near the entrance to help re-use the shavings and absorb some of the rain water the ducks drag in when they come in for the night.

I know I didnt much like walking on it at first with the horses. But after they walked on a while i loved it. I didnt like it outside either. I only used t to clean up a puddle here and there and disposed of it but in the stalls it was great. What did you mean you "refresh with pine"? I think I am going to try it in my coop.. The dust from the pine bothers me quite a bit . So after it is broke down can you just sort of sift out the droppings ??

Next time I will do a coop change when they predict rain if I have another dirt floor coop. Gross. The ducks are messy in a way that I could never sift. They have these horrible wet poop squirt poops. Then then they mash it all down with their feet. Nothing ever aerates. I know people complain the chickens scratch- but personally I like that about them!

Anyone here ever use the corrugated plastic or metal roofing to cover their coop?
What tool do you use to cut it properly?

DH has some nice snips too. I think I well definitely go that rout if we end up with the plastic.
