So those of you that may be familiar with FB Marans will you pick this guy apart? I am trying to learn what to look for. His comb has too many sprigs right?
He is 24 weeks old and weighs 7 pounds even. (I did post this in the Marans thread but was overlooked. They are talking about eggs right now.) Thanks! His eyes are the right color correct? How do his legs look? He has four toes and none look twisted or off. I need a closer up of his toes too sorry. Any other details I should photograph?

He is standing on an incline here and is leaning in his rear end a little bit- I don't know if this affects his stance oddly.

LOL Only leg shot I could find. You can at least see color?

Most of the really bad things about Marans are not there. No Squrrel tail, the comb seems to have the right number of points and I do not see sprigs. The feathers look like they are correct on the feet. Those look like copper colored feathers on the neck too. I see some fluff at the back just before the tail feathers but that all might molt out.

Keep him and wait to see what he looks like after the first molt.

We are less than 7 pages from 10,000 posts!

The Post Office found Hatching Eggs shipped by Papa Brooder after three weeks! Hoping for the best!

Feathersprings is waiting for her package of chicks to arrive safely.

Chiquita wants to make hats for her Roosters that look like the Hamburg comb(Will that make the Roosters more Fer(not family friendly)? PM her if you want to borrow an incubator for the New Years Day Hatch.

It took a bit to figure it out, but those big galvanized oval things that TSC broods their chicks in is a Stock Tank and leaky ones make great Brooders! Thanks Kim.

You can brood serious numbers of chicks in a Stock Tank. Should we start a pool on how many chickens, Ducks and Geese Amy will have next year?

MonsterClucker is now Elite Poultry. HappyChooks might be able to fix his account.

Stella Social Club is a good place to talk about Emu's.
Waitng for more Talpia Discussion. They are illegal and we wonder why.

There was an Oyster Farm update, Tinsnips are used to cut plastic and metal roofing, Horse mats and Dry Den are great for dirt coop floors and Do Not Let Your Hens go to France with an Ostrich....

I think ideally he should be a bit stouter in the chest. Tail is good ( tail is a big deal in Marans, they tend to be wrong, or at least they talk about it A LOT) Not sure about the color if his is in the right places or he has too much or its too yellow.Eyes look good, not too dark ( another hated and cursed thing in a good rooster) feet feathering is light ( some people love that some don't, not really sure on judging) No extra color on the chest, that's good.

Run your hands over his keel. It should be strong and have no bumps or indents. Apparently its a big deal in American chickens, we don't check enough for uneven keels.

I have been trying to learn about confirmation for marans By looking at what people say. Let me see if I can find the link to the post with the black and white drawing of shape. When Walt lectured at the heritage Expo, I asked a lot of Marans questions. he said the biggest thing people don't take into account was shape, and that most Marans he sees are too flat chested. And that since so many people breed for egg color the overall shape of the bird in the states is lacking. ( this is one of the reasons we had super speedy stew. flat chest, his sons are much more robust)

Did you post on the FCBM thread? It goes slower and there are some very good and gentle critiques there.
Post 4964 has the black and white Marans pic, very good for shape.

AWEsome. Thank you. I didn't know to look for fluff at the tail. So I went back through to see what you were talking about it. I found it. This is what I am talking about. I want to train my eye to look for certain things. The good, the bad, the ugly. All of it. Even if he is awful- lol- I just want to train my eyes.

Quote: Great analysis! I think the weight and size will be perfect at a year.

The comb does need work but with the other good things about him, breeding him with the right hen would likely "compensate" for the comb. I think you have a great start with him.

Now to get him some girls....
