Someone laid her first egg today! For being half marans her egg color is pretty Orp. How cool is it that I have pullets starting to lay so far in Fall??

She is an Orp! Hendersons Chicken Cart gives them a blue snow flake(That is for winter layers).

The EEs do not get a snow flake.

I am back from checking on the three week old chicks and the hatching ones. They are all fine!

7 of 9 eggs have hatched. On more has a pip and the other has a chick working on getting out.

Washing chooks right now. 1 down 2 to go. First guy was pretty easy, loved the water. Now just taking a quick snack break and then I go back to washing!

Oh yes, I have some serious cleaning to do this weekend. I think I need a dozen bags of sand too....

I got them because they were winter layers but what I am pleasantly surprised about is that fact that they are starting to lay in December! haha One of my other Buff pullets comb and wattles are getting really red too.

And I have heard they seriously slow down in Summer during extreme heat...hence the Leghorns I will be breeding. :D Hopefully covering my egg bases! haha

Quote: Yes, winter layers will start in the winter, it just takes longer sometimes.

There is even a chance that the EEs will start. Do not count on that happening until January or so though...Same with the Leghorns. In the Spring, Leghorns can start laying after 14 weeks!

Man I am so excited! lol So fun!

Quote: I have the same thing going with my hens. BAs and Basque keep plugging along In the heat. Penedesencas are supposed to do that too.

The Rocks are great winter layers so I get something even without lights.
