California - Northern

Months ago I put a flier up at the feedstore for bobwhite quail chicks (long gone). I got a call this morning from a guy wanting to know if he could put out feeders and free range quail. He wanted to naturalize his yard. I told him........................ummmmm, NO. He said he may build a pen and call back. He was pretty impressed with the turn around time on coturnix.

He said his daughter was no longer interested in her d'Anvers and wanted to get rid of them. Then he talked wistfully about how much he enjoyed going to the Stockton show. I told him my showing poultry was the result of missing the times when my 32 year old son was in 4H. You could almost hear the lightbulb go off when he realized HE could take over the birds.

It was cute!

I had some guy who wanted to keep all the girls and " free range" all the boys since he had quail around anyway. He was all involved in native plants and was involved with redoing a lot of the wild area around Richmond with native species. He hassled me about the pampas grass in my yard and went on about how hard he worked for about an hour and then left saying he was going to " call me". Didn't even NOTICE when I told him that was incredibly cruel and they were not native quail and were going to die immediatly if he did that in bad bad ways. Thank god he did not call me back, no way he was getting my birds. I understand eating animals, but not thoughtless neglect that leads to starvation and cruelty.

Plus how are you a native expert and not frigging know what a California quail looks like?? I know we have a lot of Japanese decendant people in the state, but that does not make Japanses quail natives too :D.

Quote: This guy was pretty quick to understand when I said bobwhite were not native and would disappear immediately and not survive. I told him the Japanese were domesticated and would have no idea on how to avoid predation and would not survive. So he decided he would like to build a pen and try something a bit quirkier than his current bantam chickens.

*Yawn* morning!

how is everyone?
Good Morning Lucas!

I am feeling pretty good today. I am looking forward to the weekend and then a short week next week before vacation.

By the way, the sand is amazing for the chicken runs! The hens feet look so much better now.

Ron, just wanted to tell ya that I really enjoy your digests. This thread has exploded and I don't have time to always read everything I've missed. Your daily recaps have really made it easier for me to keep up with what everyone is doing. Thanks!
