California - Northern

Hello Everyone! I am somewhat new to BYC but I have had plenty of chickens before when I lived in Alaska. :)  Just moved here to California a few months ago and am just now getting around to restarting my flock. I have *so far* 2 Blue English Orps, 1 Buff Silkie, 1 Red Sex Link, and 1 Cuckoo Marans. I also have 13 Basque (EO), 10 Wheaten Marans, 6 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, 24 Lemon Blue Bantam Cochin, and 6 Silkie hatching eggs in my two home made incubators. I also set 5 dozen Trader Joe eggs in another home made incubator to test a microcontroller device I am working on.

I hope to find some local people who would be interested in these little chicks, except the TJs as I have people lined up for those. But the rest are up for grabs depending on how they develop for the NYD Hatch Along. I plan on keeping a couple from each breed for myself but we shall see what happens with the rest of the little peepers. I just hope they all hatch! Anyways, I look forward to getting to know you all as I have never had so many neighbors so close by before!!

Welcome! Glad you found us here. If you have issues with not being able to keel all the chicks to find them homes I can help. Otherwise cl and feed stores are great places for funding buyers for babies.

I didn't see your signature before. Perhaps I will whine at you about advice for my little incorragable terroir mutt.

How is everyone this morning? An wb capa we missed you.

Welcome Brechin. I once took a Dobie to schutzhund training, just because it was the only type of dog training I had never attempted. It was just the first night temperament testing. When he was "threatened" by the instructor's helper, he hid behind me, poked his head between my knees and tried to climb into my lap, and he was a BIG boy. Protection work was not my Caleb's game!

Welcome!

Good Morning everyone!!

Hey Brechin! Welcome to the thread. You have some nice chickens over there.

Im thinking about going to eppersons animal swap. I wonder how many chickens i cam get rid of.

So I have had a busy few days. We where supposed to sign yesterday but no word except Thursday when they said they where trying to get a extension.

So who knows.
We have had some cold weather. My chickens are still in the coops.
was 26 yesterday and 29 this morning when I got up and stuff is frozen solid. Though clouds are rolling in and I hear the snow level may be just at my elevation or slightly higher. 2500 feet.
I am hearing my lower up in the North valley and Redding may have a rain snow mix. Tuesday has a colder storm that should be coming in with some light snow down to 1000 to 1500.
I will have to wait a little bit to change the chicken water as the faucet is frozen.

The Sheriff got her place; hopefully you will get yours too!

If the forecast says snow level at 1000 ft. it often will snow in Redding.

my fingers crossed too.
Need to get building coops.
Ron I was thinking of sending the order in early January. they raised there prices over 2012 but have not posted them yet or know what they are yet.

I owe my boss some blue copper maran's so depending on how many you want.
I can take up to 20. he paid for the 10 black penedesenca for me so instead of sending him money he said I can order him some of them. Or I can just send him money and we can take 13/12 respectably . I want 10 more black penedesenca and would take the rest in partridge.

Good morning all.
Just sitting here watching the snow fall. Glad I didn't do the last growers market of the year. Van gets a little squirelly with all the weight on one side. Not alot sticking yet but it early, about an inch on the cars, etc.

Welcome Brechin, the ears are great! We have a Kelpie-Dutch Sheperd mix that has the same ears. She has the dutchie brindel coat and it took quite awhile to convince DH that she wasn't part pit, one of his requirements. She is such a wonderful dog that he broke his rule of "no dogs on the couch" about two hours after I got her home.

Well my girl fooled me, I gave her eggs, she tucked them under, settled over the top, then moved to the next box. Tried it in the new box and she moved back to the first. Might be just as well since we get a week here where we only get up to 28 for the high, I would hate to loose them to the cold. I know that' wouldn't happen, I'd end up with birds in the laundry room again.

Had the 4-H Christmas party last night. Met a man who is trying to cross a bantam roo with his turkey. I was smart enough to smile and wish him well, I may ask him about processing extra boys.

Off to do something, even if it's wrong.

Most places like BYC, so it could not have been that!

PGRanch needs to keep goats out of her chicken coop. This question made me go out to my coop and measure the door opening. I hope the goats stay our!

I am pulling HARD for you cooper. If good thoughts count you will close today! SS are sooo stressful, we were lucky the people we bought from were the original owners and had long since payed off.

Banks are just slow to do anything those departments are both understaffed and don't have lines of communication between each other so its frustrating.

We are supposed to get rain but it has held off. But the breeding coop is a muddy mess and those girls are NOT happy with me. If I mix sand in there will it be less slippery? I have only used it covered in coops on the ground for easy cleaning.

I have also been trying to look up seizures and comas in chickens and have not really found anything. I wonder if its not common, or people just don't see it since they are outside . It was so strange.
