Does anyone down there have SLP?
One of my 4-Hers lost her Mottled Houdan to a hawk this weekend. She has had the worst luck ordering them. Wondering if someone might have a pullet about March when travel is better. I was going to order eggs from Horstman but sounds like a long shot getting them in good condition.
I have SLP, originally from Horstman. They are just starting to lay now and I've got a few in for a test hatch.

All the pies sound good! I would take pie over cake any day of the week! My favorite is rhubarb custard! I try to make one for myself for my birthday every year.

Wow banana chocolate pie! 2 of my favorite foods! I'll have to get someone to make this for me one day.

I wanted to share a neat book I found locally. It's the Sacramento Valley Feast by Wolfgang Rougle

It's a really neat little book about the North Valley and all the edible wild plants growing here. Very interesting stories and recipes on how to use them. Even a few ways on how to home cure olives and press them for oil.

The author actually lives just down the road from me. I ended up getting 2 extra copies signed to give to my friends:) It's fascinating to know how there can be edible plants all around...yet people don't even know it. The "second" addition is out now and it has added info too. It's availble through UCD bookstore and a few local stores in Red Bluff and Redding. Here's a link to a store in Chico:

Just thought it fit the Nor Cal thread and we were talking about olive oil which made me think of it:)

Thank you!

I was reminded about growing up and my mom having us go down by the creek and pick mustard greens that grew wild out there every spring. Delicious!

There is a little restaurant, I think in Montana, where you are given a basket and sent out to the forest to find wild food. Customers then bring the basket back and the chefs cook it for your dinner!

I will look for that book.

California Northern Daily Digest for 12/18/2012

The day started with more discussion about feeds. Bar Ale feed is from Williams CA and has solid farm style feeds. They are adding Natural and Organic feeds to their line of Chicken feed. BYC is likely making them realize that they can make a profit off of Back Yard Chicken owners if they come up with this type of feed. Azure will be carrying a couple of new brands, including Big Sky from Montana. Another brand is being added in January or February. Exciting!

A lot of us are using Purina Layeena now because of the coupons!

OR4-hmom uses Rogue feed and Super Scratch with fish oil in it! Gotta find some of that! Happy Chooks mixes crumbles with pellets because some chooks do not like pellets. Great tip!

OR4-hmom posted pictures of Deer! (Post 10910)

Hey everyone!

I'm adding a gander to my menagerie today. I'd like to find him a mate so if anyone knows of a female goose for sale/adoption in the northern california area, let me know! :)

I'm in Middletown in lake county so the closer the better.
