got a different-looking egg this morning, so now at least three of my girls are laying -- and this one is so beautifully speckled!

Whoa! Thats pretty! It looks pink, but maybe thats just the lighting?

From your Basque Hen? One of mine lays an egg that look pinkish because of the bloom.

no, the two basques aren't quite old enough yet, and their combs/faces haven't started turning red... and it's not the sussex girls either, 'cause i've gotten an egg from them just after one was in the nesting box, and its smaller and no speckles (have gotten two more like that since then) -- so it's either a marans, one of the SPPRs, or the australorp.

Quote: My questions was if it makes a difference if the pea comb is the roo or the hen. I have an Ameraucana roo that I'm going to be crossing with my blue Marans I got from Jeff to get OE. I lost my little Blue Marans cockerel from the same group, but my plan was to put him over my pea comb EE's and see if the results were different. So, you're saying it does make a difference who has the pea comb?

I was also wondering about these two cockerels I'm trying to rehome. They look identical except one has a pea comb. They look to me like they come from the same hen and all the offspring pullets from my hens with my Ameraucana roo and my hens have all been green egg layers so does that mean that both these boys should produce green laying offspring or just the pea comb boy? Sure would like to rehome these boys to someone on BYC. They're sweet boys, no aggression to us but they're stuck in my grow out pen most of the time because they have raging hormones and like to do "everything" together...if you know what I mean!

Love eggs that have speckles. I have one that looks similar to this but the spots are more chalky. Yours looks raised and it almost looks hot pink!

I caught a picture of one of my Gold Laced Polish pullets. She loves to be on this branch in the pen.....so much that most nights we have to put her in the hen house!

But she is a pretty girl....that's what I keep telling my husband when he threatens to leave her there!

Her tail isn't normally held this high, she was balancing....and she didn't blow out her crest after the last rain!

It seems to make a difference with the Araucana type OE. The Cream Legbars have straight combs and lay blue eggs, so the blue egg gene is not associated with a Pea comb on them.

It is an association though--They don't always go together with the EEs Even. We are working on something completely different with the Penes crossed with cream Legbars. I am pretty sure they will breed true, so that gets taken out of them Being EEs.

Edited to add: Some of the old timers say the egg color comes from the Roo. That needs to be checked on though....

Never heard of dubbin grown chickens (only day old chicks). Why would one do this?
When showing OEG's that are hatched prior to Nov of the prior year, (I think that's the cut off date-not positive), males are to be dubbed.

The comb, wattles, and earlobes are to be cut back, This is described in the SOP. If there was a fight between males there is less chance of losing a bird to blood loss, nothing to get ahold of.

I thought about raising them a few years ago but couldn't see myself doing the dubbing. Really couldn't pass them on to other 4-H kids either.

Modern games are dubbed also, there may be more breeds that I don't know of that require it for showing.
