I've really enjoyed reading about all these hatchlings going on. The chick pictures are adorable. My Americauna has gone broody in the last several days. Part of me would love to get her some eggs to set on, but the thought of raising fragile chicks in this freezing and often rainy weather seems crazy. So, I'll just live vicariously through those that are hatching. Would love to meet other chicken people in the Davis area to learn more as I'm new to this year nice Mar of 2012.
Happy new year!

Hello...if you decide to put eggs under her. She should take care of them. I have a broody that hatch chicks this winter. She is doing just fine.

As long as you don't cram a ton of eggs under her, she'll be able to keep the chicks warm without any issues. Give the poor girl 6-8 eggs.

I'm collecting eggs from my wellie pullet (and a few olive eggers) to set next week. I want some wellie babies growing out to by laying by mid summer.

for whatever it's worth, here's a couple of picture of my Amelia when she was just hatched -- quite dark!

a day old

5 or 6 days old
thanks Laura,
I say 4 are closer to this and 3 are lighter. Sounds good to me as both legbar and penedesenca roosters are crele pattern and lite colored.
maybe 4 girls and 3 boys ????

no new news on the Empordanesa that pipped and the other eggs look the same. I am gonna give them 2 more days

Quote:
24 hours after the first one pipped, get a big sewing needle and poke a small hole into the top(big end) of the ones without a pip. Not too deep though.

Also, make sure the humidity is correct. I have had them pip and wait a long time to zip. Is the hole clean? No amber liquid coming out?

Go Chickies!

no funny color liquid at all. I will try that. I am not sure exactly when it pipped so I will do it when I get back from the new place late morning

The eggs are finally starting to come. Pretty fun to have such a variety of colors!!

Beautiful. I Especially like the olive egg. Was that from a OE? Do tell!

Yes from olive eggeers I hatched last year. Can't actually even remember where they came from. Someday they will get their own pen and then I would have some for you. But for now they are in with my Marans. What does a Marans roo over oe hen produce egg wise? Do they just get darker anyone know?

I have a few olive eggs like that and I'm not sure witch hens in my mixed flock are laying them. I have no idea how I made them. I just put two blue and two splash Marans in with a blue isbars, I'm sure the chicks will be cute. I'm hoping there eggs are dark olive. We will see...
