hmm.. Amelia the CL x pene has always been a bit more reserved than the other girls, but she's not acting right today -- i just got home to let everyone out for an hour or so of free-ranging, but she stayed in the coop, making some somewhat forlorn-sounding chirps, and is mostly standing around very hunched up. i offered her some freeze-dried mealworms, and she gobbled them right up, but otherwise does not look happy/comfortable. not puffy-looking, though. not sure what might be up... (she's 21 weeks old on thursday)

I always suspect Coci or worms when they do that. They do not have to be puffed up, but will move slowly and stand very still. They call it Statue Standing.

I hope she gets better soon

yes, that's quite descriptive -- she DID come out of the coop, and has pecked listlessly at some grass, but isn't the usual forager that she is -- and her tail is down, not high and proud like usual.

is there any way to tell coci & worms apart?

Quote: A Vet can perform a Float test, but I would treat with corid for 5 to 7 days first. If it is Coci, she will be better in a day or so. It is quite dramatic how fast they recover.

Worms won't kill them as fast as Coci, that is why I treat for it first. Especially with one as young as Amelia. I keep a bag of the powder corid ready at all times. I just treated my 15 week olds with it.

thanks, and yes, i do have some, so i'll mix it into their water. should one avoid eating their eggs when they're on Corid?

I've never had cocci here, but I can tell you that with worms, they lose a lot of weight. If you look at your chickens and think, "gosh, they are looking really skinny" then worm them!

How old is she? Usually cocci is an issue in younger chickens. Could she be going through a light molt? They get like that when they are molting.

i gave them some de-worming stuff several months ago, and none of them seem skinny -- in fact, they all seem crazily healthy, except poor mournful Amelia. but i've put Corid in their water and will keep an eye on her -- and collected the most recent egg (so warm!) in case i shouldn't consume corid-laced eggs?

edit: from poking around here on BYC, it seems like the eggs are ok to eat (it's the worming medicine that one should avoid) -- but if anything thinks otherwise, let me know!
