Quote: I posted a picture of a GLW on the Wyandotte thread and was told he was a she. One person had it right--with the pink and growing wattles. It took him a long time to start crowing. Too bad, that was a nice chicken.

Wyandottes are one of the hard ones for gender.....

I had a SLW which turned out to be a cockerel of course lol

Last spring I picked up 3 SLW to slip under a broody that had sat on infertile eggs. Listed them on CL as a trio. At 5 months I still couldn't tell on the third, but it wasn't crowing. The feathering was so different on them they could have been 3 different breeds.

I guessed right on the BLRW and feather sexing the ones that hatched in June. I hope it works again on the ones due to hatch this weekend.

When I feather sexed the Marans it was correct but I did it the wrong way and thought I had 2 pullets and 6 cockerels. Luckily I had 6 pullets and 2 Cockerels...I hate it when I go dyslexic on things like that!

That is how my luck went when ordering st. run bantams 2 years ago. I couldn't believe my luck on those orders.

So far, at day 17, I've got 75% of my eggs with little ones swimming. I'm feeling optomistic about my first hatch.

I am thinking about getting a bigger incubator - one that doesn't care as much about my fluctuating internal house temperatures. I would need a used one because I really can't afford a new one. I have a very old Hova Bator Styrofoam incubator that I just put a fan in, I have the turning rack and the wafer thermostat. It still works, but the windows are tweaked because the Styrofoam melted along some edges, and I have lost those infernal red plugs. I am thinking about taking it apart and making one with better insulation using a metal encased cooler - but if anybody out there close by has a cabinet type incubator they want to sell... please let me know.

Sounds like you are on your way to a great hatch!

Check The Sacramento CL. They will also point you to close one. There is often one in Ceres for about $400.00. Sportsmans usually.
