California - Northern

Greetings to everyone from Novato. Been around chickens all my life and still so many breeds I never became familiar with. I favor the Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rocks, and Wyandottes. I'm hoping to find some California Greys soon.
Welcome Michael.

My SIL is in Novato. Think I might have changed her mind on chickens when she came up here to chicken sit while we went on vacation last summer.

Good luck with your search and many happy egg collecting days.

Hello redriver.
Congratulations on the chicken issues with the city.
The breeds you hope to get may deside the insulation issue. We do insulate ours, originally for winter cold but turns out we needed it more against the summer heat.
Hi Savuti! Congratulations! I posted quite a bit in the Laws and Ordinances forum back when we were trying to get our town to allow hens again. Finally got passed June 2012 after it was sent to the ballot. Here is the link if you want to read the story.

Been lurking like you to refresh my knowledge as we are finally ready two years after we started this whole thing.

Btw, thanks to whomever posted about the Marans fertile eggs on Siskiyou County Craigslist. I am scheduled to get some February 20th! Also am getting a mixed bag from Ariel in Montana, via mail. Hopefully I don't screw up too badly. If I do well I might end up with at least six hens. Roos and any
extra hens are going to be rehomed to friends who have more property outside of town.

My coop only exists on paper at this point. Probably will do a variation on the Wichita Cabin Coop. Since we built our own home, I am pretty sure we can get it done quickly... As long as I remember that it is a coop and not a house. I found myself thinking about baseboards for it and had to remind myself, "It is a coop, not a nice house. 2x6 stud wall with insulation? No! It is a coop, not a house." Although I am still undecided on the insulation issue. Let me know if anyone has a strong opinion. We are Sunset climate zone 2b, if that helps.

Hello!
My coop will be based of the Wichita Cabin Coop aswell, but will most likely be the size of The Palace(based on Wichita too), haha. I love both those coops. I unfortunately do not have as much experience as you when it comes to carpentry, actually pretty much none, so will be relying on help from friends and my boyfriend's family. My biggest concern will be the fog, it makes everything very damp when it rolls in super thick, I live right next to the ocean. My main design plans will revolve around predator protection(mainly raccoons), chicken comfort and ease of maintenance, those coops seem to cover that pretty well. Good luck with building your coop! Sounds like you don't need it though :)

The show in Anderson on March 29/30 is for both adult and youth. The Shasta County show is a youth show as far as I know and is on the 31 of March.

Oh believe me I'm very aware of it haha! I've already found myself considering ordering a few extras to make sure I end up with 6 in the end since I'm paranoid that some aren't going to make it, despite my best efforts. Definitely building a coop that will more than comfortably hold 6 chickens, maybe more

Hi all, can not believe I just discovered this thread! We moved up to Grass Valley area over the summer and have been in Chicken Heaven ever since (sadly some of them went to chicken heaven as well -- its been tough transitioning our dogs to livestock)-- we got 6 chicks, then ordered a minimum hatch of 15 = 21 total, and are now down to 11! But number holding steady since November so hopefully it will be all good from here-- they just started laying a month ago its been GREAT!
Def. you cant go wrong with a bigger coop!

Has anyone on this thread heard from Karen Anderson/Anderago Farms since Monday? She and her young daughter have gone missing. There is a facebook campaign if you'd like more information.

Although the family/homestead are now up past GV in the Sierras, I still work in SF and commute down once a week! What part of the east Bay? I can ask around, so sad to hear of this will watch the local news (am back tommorrow nite)-- Hopefully it was a miscommunication? And they are fine somewhere...

Is there a website for local kids shows? what would be the best link? We are in Grass Valley California and have a splendid Black Jersey Giant Roo(8months old!) that my 10 year old is dying to show--
