California - Northern

They are and I can't wait to get some. The girls are now 7-8 mos old and still nothing. That and my Cream Legbars (gorgeous blue eggs). At least I got them split into two pens about a week ago. I've seen the boys mounting the girls, so I should be close. And by the time they get past the first few eggs, they'll be ready to hatch!!!!!

I can barely wait!

Exciting! How many Cream Legbar hens do you have? Those blue eggs are the best and I might need to buy some chicks or hatching eggs from you some day! It will only be when we move because now we have 2 coops stuffed with chickens, chicks in the school-room and even chickens in the garage....and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Is there a website for local kids shows? what would be the best link? We are in Grass Valley California and have a splendid Black Jersey Giant Roo(8months old!) that my 10 year old is dying to show--
I got most of this info when I went to the show in Salem. The judge that donates his time to judge our local fair was judging in Salem and while up there at the ABA booth they had a print out. There may be a website but I don't know of it.

Most show have a Youth Show also. I work off the entry forms, they usually have a section for youth entries.

It does feel good to look out in the yard and see more Hens then Roosters.... Just say'in !

Yes, it is nice to see the hens out free ranging. I love watching my lone silkie rooster watch over his little flock of girls. (all 4 of them and 2 are just pullets) He seems to always stand tall and be on the look out for predators and shows them where the food bowls are. He is almost too sweet though. I've seen him do the dance with Mysty Blue (but he has trouble following through) and I might have to do AI. Mysty Blue is such a feisty little thing.......Poor Leo Pierre is literally "hen pecked"!

By the way, Miss Molly, you live in a beautiful area. We pass the quaint, old fashioned buildings off 80. My son has choir and orchestra co-op up in Meadow Vista every Monday. One of these days I'm going to check out some of the little towns and backroads up there.

Hi all!

I've been lurking for quite awhile now, mainly because I unfortunately do not have chickens...yet. There is now a timeline for my chicken adventure. I will be getting chicks in early April!

Not a lot, just 6 since I live in a residential neighborhood and won't be able to provide a large area for them to roam around in. I posted on this thread back around the time of the Heirloom Expo, which I went to and really enjoyed. I'm looking forward to going to the show in Stockton this Saturday, sounds like it's going to be pretty awesome :) I am super excited to own chickens and can't wait for April! Actually I can, because I still need to build a coop, haha. I've really been enjoying reading all the great information on this site and I'm hoping I'm going to be as prepared as I can be for the arrival of my chicks. Hope everyone is doing well :)
It is great to meet you! Yes, six is a nice start. That is how many I started with and look at me now! I just set 18 eggs and have 10 more on their way. I hope the Small Animal Exchange starts up sooner than April this year...

I want every one that I see! I was told yesterday that serious breeders only keep one or two breeds. I live in town so I can't even breed one now. Of course I hope to keep Some Roosters in the Country soon. Is that the first step to moving to the County?
Greetings to everyone from Novato. Been around chickens all my life and still so many breeds I never became familiar with. I favor the Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rocks, and Wyandottes. I'm hoping to find some California Greys soon.

Welcome! What about Dominique's? Barred Chickens with some color, like The Marraduna Basque?

See I am enabling already....
Quote: The 18 eggs I set last night are a mix of Marans hens with an EE and a Marans Roo. Maybe some Dark egg layers or Olive Egg layers.

Quote: The Sherriff is up there! She just moved to a new place too. Molly is up there too? Is Debs_flock? You All should have coffee or breakfast together.

Cooper12 is now Hangtown Farms. Just thought I would share.
I am still Jason and Cooper is still my little boy...

Deb awsome on the egg.

You can not go wrong with kale or chard. We steam Kale and blend it. add it to the kids Mac and Cheese.
Jason, I have a question for you. How did you prepare your chickens for the move to a different property? Maybe I should ask, "Did you do anything to get the chickens' immune systems ready for the move?" There is also the stress factor which vitamins/electrolytes can help, but I've always heard that each property/location will have a totally different soil content, different organisms, etc. I'm just curious if there is a way to beef up their bodies ahead of time in preparation instead of just packing them up and unloading them onto new land. Like maybe getting shovel fulls of the "new soil" and adding it to their area so they could scratch through it? I'd love to hear ideas or experience for moving a whole flock of chickens....

For the big shows, someone starts a thread. Others arrange for the birds or hatching eggs to be swapped at the show.

I brought a bird catching net to the Heirloom Festival and picked up hatching eggs.

The Stockton show is great because there will be people there from the whole US and Canada. It is a great place to get some special Poultry.
