Greetings to everyone from Novato. Been around chickens all my life and still so many breeds I never became familiar with. I favor the Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rocks, and Wyandottes. I'm hoping to find some California Greys soon.

Hi Savuti! Congratulations! I posted quite a bit in the Laws and Ordinances forum back when we were trying to get our town to allow hens again. Finally got passed June 2012 after it was sent to the ballot. Here is the link if you want to read the story.

Been lurking like you to refresh my knowledge as we are finally ready two years after we started this whole thing.

Btw, thanks to whomever posted about the Marans fertile eggs on Siskiyou County Craigslist. I am scheduled to get some February 20th! Also am getting a mixed bag from Ariel in Montana, via mail. Hopefully I don't screw up too badly. If I do well I might end up with at least six hens. Roos and any extra hens are going to be rehomed to friends who have more property outside of town.

My coop only exists on paper at this point. Probably will do a variation on the Wichita Cabin Coop. Since we built our own home, I am pretty sure we can get it done quickly... As long as I remember that it is a coop and not a house. I found myself thinking about baseboards for it and had to remind myself, "It is a coop, not a nice house. 2x6 stud wall with insulation? No! It is a coop, not a house." Although I am still undecided on the insulation issue. Let me know if anyone has a strong opinion. We are Sunset climate zone 2b, if that helps.

Cold is not a problem around here. Heat can be. If it stays in the 100s around where you live you might want to insulate so you don't loose girls in the hot months. But misters might be better. Also think about lights if you want winter eggs while you are building.

Hi all, can not believe I just discovered this thread! We moved up to Grass Valley area over the summer and have been in Chicken Heaven ever since (sadly some of them went to chicken heaven as well -- its been tough transitioning our dogs to livestock)-- we got 6 chicks, then ordered a minimum hatch of 15 = 21 total, and are now down to 11! But number holding steady since November so hopefully it will be all good from here-- they just started laying a month ago its been GREAT!

I lived in rough and ready for a while when I was younger. And had friends that stayed in grass valley forever. Gratz on the eggs! It is very exciting when they start laying.

I have a Icelandic what I thought was a hen tat just grew a big comb and wattles this week. Still no room feathers however. She was born this summer, could a rooster bloom that late? I can't find my hatching notes to see exactly how old she is but sometime between may and September.

She is a tiny thing too. Her sister is a month or 2 younger and is getting a mini comb too. I thought she was still growing, but maybe she is ready to lay?

The show in Anderson on March 29/30 is for both adult and youth. The Shasta County show is a youth show as far as I know and is on the 31 of March.

I was wondering more about exposing them to the new soil. Is that not usually an issue? If not -good, I'm worrying for nothing.

As for the vitamins & electrolytes I found a great (and cheap) source at the Echo Valley Ranch Feed Store in Auburn made by Agri Labs. It is a 4 oz. pouch of powder that you add to their water. It's enough for 128 gallons of water so I just sprinkle enough in each waterer to turn it yellowish-orange. I bought it 5 months ago and still have 1/3 left. It is only $2.69. I was looking for an alternative to the Sav-A-Chick vitamins because they are so expensive. This stuff can be used on livestock and poultry.

I've been wondering forever where you live in San Jose. I never dreamed people could have chickens down there. But it sounds like you have a lot.

We lived in Evergreen before moving up here -to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area-LOL! My in-laws live in Santa Clara so we still get down there a few times a year.

At the Tehama Co fairgrounds. It is right off of the highway at the main exit in Red Bluff.

The youth show is at Shasta College, I think.

We live in the east foothills by alum rock park. Technically we are about 3 blocks out of town. This area was built up in the late 60's so all the lots are big since the land was almost free then. We bought when everything was tanked from the original owners. It was our little miracle.

They have an address of 650 Antelope Blvd for the Anderson show.

The Shasta Youth show doesn't have much more than the Aeronautics bldg. at Shasta College.

In the old days, you had to go in a special entrance that was past the main entrance to get to the livestock area.

That was in the 80's though...
