The show was great. Never have seen so many HUGE chickens and so many tiny chickens. It was really nice to meet and chat Haileigh (waititout) and her husband. We didn't buy any chickens either, but the Serama seed has been planted for my youngest boy who fell in love with those little beauties. The roosters have such a diminutive crow that I think we can have a rooster or two and breed some mini-chickens for fun and pets for the kids. My husband, on the other hand, really liked the big boys. Brahmas and JGs and Orpingtons especially in blue.
Either way, giant or bantam, we would have to build another coop to accommodate any of these guys!
I took a few pics, but mostly for capturing the individual character of some of them. It's hard to take good pics when they are caged. The bars get in the way and there is not much for scale.
The last post was 13 HOURS ago!!!! And I'm here all by myself too...oh wait, Ron just came in....hope everyone is busy with the chickens and taking pictures of them to share.
Hope all is well with everyone! Top of the morning to ya'll!
It is a glorious day here in Northern CA. We are having an early Spring with temps getting to the low 60s by the weekend. Of course the 15 day forecast shows rain and cold temps returning next week. I bet my Plum tree will bloom this week and then it will be too cold for the bees again....
I love the pictures from the show. Debs_flock owes us some pictures from her winners at the show Congratulations!
Did others bring chickens home from the show? Did Kim(capayvalleychick) bring home some SG Dorkings from Emma's flock? I bet there are a lot of chicken Stories.
I am waiting to hear from Jason and his moving chickens this weekend while sick. I have a sinus thing trying to become more but so far it is not moving and on day 5.
I agree, awesome photos! Mine never turn out well.I have to learn how to take good close up shots. I do want to see Deb's winners. I always try to figure out whose birds are whose at these shows. There was a little BR that I liked & wondered if it was Debs.
Emma did not bring any for sale, just two pullets that she entered. I wasn't looking to buy, anyway. I did see a GINORMOUS White Rock rooster in the sale barn that made me pause and wonder what would happen if I crossed him with my Delawares. I wouldn't actually do that but wonder what the result would be ??? Any genetics experts out there know what that cross would produce?
Quote: The SG Pullet(almost a hen I suppose--she is holding out on me the little free loader--no Dorking eggs yet this season) I hatched from Emma's flock is not that big. She has nice colors but the comb is a bit wonky. I will get some pictures soon. She holds her own with the others but is not too high in the pecking order. She usually hangs out by herself. The EE hen hangs out with the RIRs but is a bit of a loner too.
I can't find what you would get if you cross a White Rock with a Delaware. There may be some barring leading to a sex link. You can make a sexlink by crossing Delawares with RIR. Guaranteed, you would have very healthy and robust chickens from the cross.
We had a wild chicken weekend this weekend. As well as the show on Saturday, we fed our first fodder to the chickens, started fermenting feed, and got the meal worm farm moved into permanent digs. I am excited about the fermented feed, I can use less smell , lower feed bill and being able to use one type of food for all the birds!
It seems like we did something else too, but I can't remember what!
BDM, I do have 2 extra FCBM roos, but one again the problem is getting them close to you. DH is going to Fresno Tuesday, is that closer? The FCBMs I saw at the show this year for sale did not look good to me, I was not tempted. Of course there was none last year, so I suppose it was better.
I was NOT good at the show this year. Of course I was not expecting to be . I dropped off Owl( partridge silkie roo) with cnm, a partridge ( shes very silver not sure what color you call her) showgirl to deb, some quail to chooklit, and a white silkie to papabrooder. I came home with 5 dz eggs ( A. is incubating them for me in her brinsea cabinet, cant pass up someone who wants to use their best incubator in the world) Silver leghorn ( the guys birds were beautiful) Bardevelier, Silkies from Shelly , some jubilee orphs and mf leghorns from Cheryl, and Wellsummers. I just hoovered all the eggs I could find, its a great place to see what birds will look like without the hazards of shipping. I sent Mario around grabbing all the eggs while I looks at the SHOWGIRLS!
I got a beautiful trio white and partridge. Of course I just traded away all my white and partridge chickens, to go with them! And a little black girl I got from papabrooder. They have great foot feathering and beautiful shape. The partridge girl does not have a correct comb, but all my boys have massive beautiful combs so that is not a problem I expect to keep. So Iggy and Ester, my first showgirl pair, are now headed out to pasture with the laying flock for a while. Mario was asking if Iggy was headed for the stew pot, but hes still my favorite chicken so its not gonna happen!
Here are some pics of the new guys:
Everything I got was a bit blurry. They did not like the camera. But they are settling in to the pokey for quarantine.
We stopped to get feed on the way home and got ANOTHER surprise. The feed store had an adult royal palm hen! when does that happen!
I give you Pumpkin!
Pumpkin had been on her own for a week at the store and is not happy with the solitude. Shes eating but not a lot, and calling out to stuffing and cranberries. Stuffing is calling back, but I don't know if it is " come and play with us" or " get away from my territory you skank!"
I am not sure how to introduce them or keep pumpkin from running off. I didn't think about that problem till she was in the car and we were driving home, heh. We will have to clip her wing and introduce slowly. I am worried she will get too depressed so alone however. I have been going in to sit with her and offer her treats but she is still very nervous, she was either not hand raised or does not think I look like her people.
She is a very pretty girl however, and I hope it works out, Cranberries needs 2 girls so he does not get interested in my hens!
When we stopped in Oakland to drop off the eggs, a crowd formed around our car looking in at the turkey in the back of the SUV. We came out and there was like 3 groups around the car, too funny!
I also had some nice but unexpected fertility confirmation for Orlando. I have 2 silkie/cream legbar chicks! I found ester hiding on a nest of eggs when it was freezing and didn't want her to kill them so I gave her NYD chicks and took her eggs. 2 were not Iggys children! Blue is dominant egg color right? So they will lay blue eggs? They are very cute. I was thinking I should call them creamies or silkbars! All the other cream legbars are developing as well, so it looks like I will finally have chicks this year.

How many did you sell from the back of your SUV In Oakland? Great Idea! The next time I want to rehome, I will drive to a parking lot and put out a box: Chickens for sale; Fifteen dollars or Best Offer!
Want to give you all an update on Jewel my penguin walking blue Langshan! She is still walking funny but not as vertical as she was. I am keeping her inside in a dog kennel at night but letting her outside on our fenced in patio during the day where she has access to sunshine, dirt, and the rest of the flock through the welded wire fence panels. She eats like normal, dust bathes, preens, and forages under the bushes. She has been laying an egg almost every day and today it was huge! It weighs 74 g and her other eggs are all pullet sized with weights around 48 g. Maybe it's a double yolker?!!!
Okay, here's one to start. My partridge silkie cockerel got RV and this was the national meet I'll have to shrink some more pictures.
Here's a shot of him when we got home before he was put away.
Did anyone bring other chickens home??? Like I needed it..................LOL................but I brought home a 1/4 group of LF BR chicks.
I do want to see Deb's winners. I always try to figure out whose birds are whose at these shows. There was a little BR that I liked & wondered if it was Debs.
That is my boy and he won his class! The pullet that got RV was one of my girls. Prolific pens, I'm pulling around 8 eggs out of their pen per day! She laid two during the show.

Well great, it sounds like she is recovering! Maybe she was making that double yolker inside? Do you still have to soak her so she can release the fluid inside?
