California - Northern

good morning everyone!

We had a wild chicken weekend this weekend. As well as the show on Saturday, we fed our first fodder to the chickens, started fermenting feed, and got the meal worm farm moved into permanent digs. I am excited about the fermented feed, I can use less smell , lower feed bill and being able to use one type of food for all the birds!

It seems like we did something else too, but I can't remember what!

BDM, I do have 2 extra FCBM roos, but one again the problem is getting them close to you. DH is going to Fresno Tuesday, is that closer? The FCBMs I saw at the show this year for sale did not look good to me, I was not tempted. Of course there was none last year, so I suppose it was better.

I was NOT good at the show this year. Of course I was not expecting to be :D. I dropped off Owl( partridge silkie roo) with cnm, a partridge ( shes very silver not sure what color you call her) showgirl to deb, some quail to chooklit, and a white silkie to papabrooder. I came home with 5 dz eggs ( A. is incubating them for me in her brinsea cabinet, cant pass up someone who wants to use their best incubator in the world) Silver leghorn ( the guys birds were beautiful) Bardevelier, Silkies from Shelly , some jubilee orphs and mf leghorns from Cheryl, and Wellsummers. I just hoovered all the eggs I could find, its a great place to see what birds will look like without the hazards of shipping. I sent Mario around grabbing all the eggs while I looks at the SHOWGIRLS!
Thank you for Owl - he is a Hoot! Literally! He kept hooting at the babies squabbling in the back of the car next to him! Now I understand why his name is Owl. He is also very beautiful. I had him outside in the sun today for a bit and I kept being amazed by the colors I could see in his silkie feathers, I didn't know you could see the green sheen on silkies!

I had someone offer "stud services" between my Buff Orpington hen and her Buff Orpington rooster(s). She has several breeding pens around her property and we'd just drop the chickens inside together for awhile. Knowing my Buffy's broody behaviour and always-wanting-babies attitude she'd probably submit and be mated in 5 minutes.

Does anyone know what a good price would be if I do this? Has anyone else ever shared hens or roosters and what did you pay or charge? And, is this a common (safe) thing to do with a sheltered backyard chicken like my flock? I think I was afraid to ask "how much" but wanted to research it first anyway. I appreciate anyones suggestions.

I've often though about this too since I have a broody hen and can't have roosters, lol she wants babies. Of course there is a risk of bringing home a disease also.

Well great, it sounds like she is recovering! Maybe she was making that double yolker inside? Do you still have to soak her so she can release the fluid inside?
I haven't been soaking her and her abdomen does not feel so swollen and squishy. Her posture is still like a penguin and she spends a lot of time laying down while pecking at things. So, small improvements so I'll give her a few more days of pampering and then see how she is.

HAHA! Owl is my revenge ( good and bad!) for Ron Giving me orlando! He is sweet and friendly, wants to be head roo, and is a noisy and fertlie little bugger. he used to love kids too. He would run up and try and sit on the laps of the play date people at the house he grew up at.

I slept in Sunday morning till there was actual sun. Mario was like " how are we so late getting up!" wee both looked at each other and said " NO Owl" he and Orlando would crow off at about 4 AM.

I must admit, most of my favorite chickens are roosters, they have such personalities.

Your 2 problems are going to be
1. catching stuff
2. Will she stop laying if she gets moved? Its common for them to stop laying if there is a big change in routine, moving is pretty big. Its much more likely to work if you borrow her rooster for a week or so, they don't get out of the mood.

I have not seen people charge for roo services so on that I've got nothing.

Mario had an emergency out in Sac today and drove down there. I checked CL and found someone selling 55 gal of organic feed for 60 bucks. They said it was about 5.5 50 lb bags worth. Im excited, sounds like it will ferment well!

Want to give you all an update on Jewel my penguin walking blue Langshan! She is still walking funny but not as vertical as she was. I am keeping her inside in a dog kennel at night but letting her outside on our fenced in patio during the day where she has access to sunshine, dirt, and the rest of the flock through the welded wire fence panels. She eats like normal, dust bathes, preens, and forages under the bushes. She has been laying an egg almost every day and today it was huge! It weighs 74 g and her other eggs are all pullet sized with weights around 48 g. Maybe it's a double yolker?!!!
Look for a flat area in the side of the egg where two eggs went together.
I can sometimes tell by looking at a picture..

I have been running a nasty fever in the 101 to 104 range since I left the Stockton show Saturday. Luckily my old landlord s letting me move the chickens this weekend. Sunday am was cold with off and on snow I was in bed asleep. I will build the runs this weekend. I am sure I will be better then.

Hope you feel better Jason and the move goes smoothly.

Good to hear you have some more time!

Did I tell you that I get to order Partridge Pene hatching eggs in two weeks?

Elias should have White Emp Eggs soon too!

Rest up and get healthy!
