I took a few photos for Jeff of his chickens. I am sharing a few randoms I got. Ones that may not make his site...but made me smile anyway. :D

Never get tired of looking at your photos. Makes me want to get another good camera. We haven't used a good camera since they went digital. I'm wondering if all my lenses would still fit on the new digital?
Quote: Thanks for all the well wishes. She scared the daylight out of us. This picture was taken after she had some benedryl, it was twice as bad. I thought we were going to lose her. Have decided to change vets after this. This is the 2nd emergency that I have had that I didn't get a call back from my vet. The last time was during regular hours but they had too many emergencies to see my dog.....I had been with this clinic since they were fresh out of vet school, over 15 years ago! Because it took so long for me to find another vet that could take her, she died.

The Jaerhon's are not a very big chicken, but they seem to lay well. Nice size egg for the size of chicken and they don't eat to much. I'm really liking them..

How were the eggs for selling as eating? Their eggs aren't that big right? I find that most people love the big eggs. I have my Polish eggs in there and occacianaly there's a pullet egg that is small from one of the other breeds but I balance them with some of the really big eggs. I try to pick larger egg layers for my eating eggs.

Mike, glad to see you back! Miss your goings on!

Jason, glad you're feeling a bit better and hope you get some time to check out Linda's place. She's done some wonderful things around her place and if she ever lets her contractor John have a break, he would be great to help you with stuff you don't want to do. His work looks to be quality and he has come up with some great ideas for Linda (I should say, what Linda doesn't come up with, John does). And Linda can show you around the places for good wine, music and food too! I hope to get over there for some wine tasting (all work related of course

) and meet up with Linda and see her place in real life.

edited because I can't remember names to save my soul! Sorry Jason

Boy I hate emergency vet trips!
I ended up as sole assist when mine ripped off a toe nail and almost bled to death. They will say it doesn't happen but the vet told me it was close. He was closed when I showed up. We worked for 45 minutes trying to stop the flow. Husband was a little freaked when he got home and saw the blood all over.

Had another one where dog clipped the power box chasing after squirrel, looked up and right leg is solid blood from sholder down. Called vet to tell them I'm on my way in. When they looked at him initially they thought "no big deal". Got call when they knocked him out and were tr'ying to find source of bleeding, he had knicked his aorta. The visable cut was less than 3/4" but I knew it was bad. They no longer doubt me.

I had one of those after hours calls (aren't they all?). I put the dogs out on a Sunday morning. When they play (3 border collies), they body slam into each other. Someone hit my oldest girl. Five minutes after they went out the door, I heard the yelp. When I looked she was just standing there. When I went to her, her right back leg was broken through both bones just above her hock. Her foot was dangling loose and just flopping back and forth.

Had to take her to emergency for a stabilizing splint and pain meds, then wait until the next day for the orthopedic surgeon to come to town.

Now she runs just as fast as everyone else, even though she has a large lump of calcification in the leg. I no longer let them all play together unsupervised.

Hello everybody,
It's been quite awhile since I have been on the boards. I have made some big changes & am continuing to do so. My son is moving out & he is my man power. I need to keep only what I can handle on my own so I am greatly cutting down the numbers.
It was so nice seeing some of you at the Stockton show. I hope to see some at Fresno also. My plans are to take a friend & go to Jules' place & us all go together from Madera.
MrsMooncat, Jules, took home my Salmon Faverolles, B/W Ameraucanas, 4 or 5 Coronation Sussex, the rest to go to Cheryl for her home layer flock & a cockerel to Sarah if she wants one to replace Sir Giles. One turkey went home to Madera with all those chickens too.............I sold my Wheaten Marans at Stockton on a presale..........I have sold some Light Sussex, some Orphingtons & continue to put sales on Craigslist here. I still have my SIlver Gray Dorking pair that I will sale. A pen of Light Sussex (originally from Thom Dean) & several Blu/black Orphingtons. I have a pair of Golden Cuckoo Marans & a pair of Dominiques & a pair of New Hampshires. I think I am keeping the rest.
Chiquita, when I got home from Stockton I rechecked the Royal Palms I have they are all girls so I do have an extra. Now I need to find a tom for the other 2........LOL
I got my first OE egg the other day & am excited about what's to come. I am getting very stingy about letting go of any AMs or OE waiting for those colored eggs............LOL
I keep busy in the house now mostly, sitting down, doing my crafts. I decide what to sell or move with the chickens but my son does 99% of the physical work. It will get better as the weather changes & warms up. I am soooooooooooooo looking forward to it & even some chicks in the spring future.
I imagine everyone else is getting charged up for Spring too.

I was excited to see one of my blue marans, who I'm waiting to lay a nice chocolate egg, hanging with the roo all day and tonight she moved next to him on the roost....then I came down to the house to watch the rest of the Superbowl and the puppy was acting weird, shaking her head and scratching at her face. I look at her and her face is blowing up like a balloon! I had given her the 6-1 shot of her puppy shots earlier.....she had anaphylaxis. By the time I could find any benedryl her eyes were swollen shut and she looked like a Shar pei on a springer spaniel body. We rushed her to the 24 hour vet (these things never happen during regular hours). They gave her a shot of benedryl and steroids (and a couple of hundred dollars) and we have to keep giving benedryl. Poor baby.....and then we missed the best part of the Superbowl!

I am very sorry to hear about the unfortunate experience your little puppy had. I have dogs; the allergic reaction can be quite frightening which I have experienced in the past. The breed I have, Pekingese, and many others, show bad reaction to inoculations and at times can be life threatening if the swelling is inside the throat. Specially with the puppies, we give them children's antihistamine about 20 minutes before the injection which works quite nicely, and prevents reaction. Any over the counter Children Antihistamine will work. Please follow the "application directions" as to how much to give which will prevent adverse reactions; and will save you the outrageous vet fees..
Also, we make sure the puppy vaccination does not include "Leptopirosis" which is highly allergic to many breeds of puppies. The most common way to contract the Leptosis, is for your puppy to eat "seal meat". Since many of our dogs don't have the opportunity to hunt down seals and consume their meat, the Leptosis vaccine is administered to adult dogs only ( just in case).. Mine and many breeders' puppies only receive: canine distemper, adenovirus type-2, parainfluenza, and parvo vaccine (modified live virus) first year of their life.
Please be careful with the Rabies inoculation which she may react to that one as well; but, the children's antihistamine will work for that one as well. For the last several years, Rabies shots are being administered at a quite a young age which is yet another problem for many dog breeds. If given at an early age , in most cases, puppies are not able to build antibodies against this disease.
My heart goes to the puppy and to you, and hope she heals soon.

Quote: I don't know because I still don't have them. I have been waiting for over a year for my chicks from SH.

I decided I now longer want to sell eating eggs, or atleast not on the scale I was selling them before-. Last year I had 180 chickens in my layer flock and offered eggs via an honor box 3 days a week. It worked well but it was very time consuming. I decided to quit when I could not keep up with the cost of organic feed. I gave over 100 birds to a 14 year old boy that was starting off in the business. His family has a cattle ranch so the chickens went to live in tractors following his cows.

I was charging $5 a dozen and I think probably brook even when I took into consideration the cost to get birds to POL, their molting cycle and then their winter break LOL. I still keep small layer flock so I have eggs to give away to family and friends.

When I was selling eggs, some people only wanted small eggs because they preferred the taste. I had a couple people who only wanted Bantam eggs and would gladly pay $5 per dozen for them since they could not find them anywhere else. Once people try the small eggs, they love em. I would pack the small and bantam eggs together and they would always sell out, sometimes before the big ones.

Hi Karen!

It is good to hear from you!

I hope you can get down to a number that is manageable for you.

Hi Mike, I was totally thinking of you... Glad to see your back. I was starting to get a little worried..we missed you! Molly
Welcome Back Mike!
Welcome back mike! No broody for me. She was back on the roost tonight.
Hi Mike! I used to live in Cottonwood and work in Redding. Live up in Yreka now. Nice to meet you. R.
Hey everybody. Thanks for thé welcome back.
Molly nice Jaerhorns ! It was nice to have Ron come by. Linda stop by any time. So Deann the crele are laying real well now. Today I got another 4 eggs. I thought they would stop when I moved but are kicking into gear. I also moved the Empordanesa over today and introduced there new rooster. I finished the runs and covered them. This netting is super strong. Feels like 100 plus pound test. Any hawk can try but would break every bone in its body trying. So now all my crele and empordanesa are laying. super happy ! I am still fighting this nasty bug but feel like it is getting better.. Deb , Deann , if he is a boy or any of the others you can take him. Girls nut brown guys more grey. Giant extension of the head spot some say.
I took a few photos for Jeff of his chickens. I am sharing a few randoms I got. Ones that may not make his site...but made me smile anyway. :D
I love that little frizzle at Jeff's place. Its à trip to watch him chase around thé other rooster

It was nice to see you and Jules at the show. I sure wish I could buy some of your breeders, darn no rooster in residential area policy! I will be going to the Fresno show too. Can't wait for spring!
