Thanks, I couldn't find egg size info on the links I found on search and wondered if it was a small bird if the eggs were also. They sound ideal for a layer flock then.
Oh your poor sweet girl! I am glad she is feeling better. How scary! I am glad she is doing better!Yes, it was most likely the lepto. I've bred Cocker Spaniels for over 30 years (this is our first Springer Spaniel). Actually, leptosis is commonly contracted in waterways or through contact with urine from wildlife. Mostly the wildlife that we chicken owners attract with our keeping of chickens, so anyone keeping chickens should vaccinate their dogs against it. In addition to keeping chickens and living out on a farm, we own a boat and do a lot of hiking in rivers and streams so our dogs are a candidate for the lepto vaccine. Lepto is traditionally given at 4 months.
Being a breeder, I've always been aware of the lepto vaccine issues but personally have never experienced a reaction. But knew exactly what was happening when she shook her head...well, at first I felt her neck to see if she had a knot at the point of injection, that may have been bothering her but I had massaged it really well and there was no knot. I then felt her jowl and it was already hardening and swelling...I had my husband take her and weigh her as I looked up the dosing on the benedryl, then ran to find the ONE pill I somehow recalled having. By the time I got back to her she looked like a Shar pei! The benedryl was one pill in the packaging but not in the box so it didn't have the dose on the little backing! I gave her 1/4 just to get some benedryl on board and we headed to the only 24 hour clinic, a 1/2 hour away (if you went the speed limit, we went 90 mph). I called them on the way to tell them I was bringing a 4 month old with anaphylaxis. by the time we got there she looked a lot better but we opted to have them give her a shot of benedryl and the steroid to help get it through her. She was still mildly swollen this morning but is looking much better today. Still dosing her with some benedryl orally.
I'm not a fan of yearly vaccines, I think that over-vaccination can cause over-stimulation of the immune system, and the destruction of the dog’s own blood cells by the white blood cells (I think we over-vaccinate our children too) so I won't boost her unless we go somewhere that a lot of domestic and wildlife animals potentially frequent. But you can be sure she'll get a course of benedryl prior and the lepto will be separate from the other vaccines and given a few days apart so that it's not such a jolt to her system and hope she's A OK!
Such a wealth of information here, thank you everyone for the support.![]()
OMG, she just came in the house looking like this!

Oh my gosh he is a trip! He reminds me of my little bantam wyandotte roo- but mine is only sassy if you mess with his girls. lolHey everybody. Thanks for thé welcome back.
I love that little frizzle at Jeff's place. Its à trip to watch him chase around thé other rooster
I might be interested in thé Marans. And i do need à rooster for my layer flock. I have about 30 hens and no mature rooster for them.
Quote: Thank you, I bookmarked it. I've been to that site several times and couldn't find it when I needed it of course. Thanks!
The vet said the only dogs that don't need it are the little old ladies who's little fluffy dogs feet rarely hit the ground. Since most dogs go for a walk where other potentially infected dogs or wildlife (any wildlife, not just seals) may have walked, then Lepto is well advised. I just think they don't need as many vaccines as most vet subscribe to.I can't tell you how many times I've been told that we don't need to get Lepto. We lived in Smith River in the 80's when the dead seals were washing up on the beach. We still take our dogs to the beach when we go to the coast, they will continue to get lepto.
I have a dominate white gene question. I have two white EE cockerels I've been trying to rehome. Really nice boys but the colorful boys go first. So I finally get a woman who's very excited about them, specifically the pea comb boy. She asked me some questions about them to see if they have the dominant white gene. I don't know anything about it. Anyone have any information/input on what the dominate white gene would offer?
Because my birds now steal food from each other...I am back to feeding mostly flock raiser. It's the safest food to feed them. All different ages, sexes and even types of birds.
Which is better Purina Flockraiser OR Nutrena's version of all flock (or something like it). One is almost $3 more dollars for the same amount. I cut it all with oats fight now to reduce the protein content. I just wasn't sure if Nutrena or Purina was a better brand for the all flock type food?
Quote: And I've been using the Nutrena All Flock exclusively. I've had great results. I originally had my feed store order it for me, now he sells it to everyone.
