California - Northern

Hey everyone,
I just connected with some people on a beer brewing board with members located all over California. Tomorrow I'll put up the FB link which you can post on to see if anyone has (or will have) spent grains for your chickens. They are free since they usually just throw the wet grains away. I'm so excited!

Thank you for setting this up!

I hope someone is close to me! Spent grains are good for the chickens!(In moderation right Shantih?)

I"ve figured out how to get the girls to step up the laying, worm them!

I didn't count how many they layed Saturday when I gave them the Wazine, but Sunday I got 27 eggs. Monday was only 24 since a couple of the bantams took the day off. Today was 30 eggs.

Last week I think the most I got in a day was 14. Go figure.

laying eggs takes a lot of energy so anything that takes away their energy will cut production!

The eggs will hatch better too.

So we should also worm hens? We usually only worm those that seem sick/ thin after we worm theu gain weight again :-)

If one has worms, they all will have them.

You can have a fecal test to see if the flock has worms.

Mine weren't looking sickly but they were eating more food than usual. Not a lot but enought that I noticed the difference. I really prefer getting the fecal tests done rather than worming every month or six months. I now know my girls only had roundworm and piparzine will take care of the problem.

I haven't figured it all out yet since it would be quite a staggered hatch, but I have a hard time seeing  into my brown eggs let alone a 7 year old.

Wish TJ was closer, it's a hour drive from our place.  I quess that's the price you pay for country living.

I drive through GP to get to the coast. If you want, the next time I go I could pick some up for you and hand them off.

Quote: Well... I was sort of wondering if they were kidding. I did have one person tell me years ago that those fluffballs couldn't possibly be a chicken - they didn't look ANYTHING like a chicken! That was where the "walks like a chicken" criteria came from.
Quote: Thank you for the further clarification of Sizzles and Silkies. So my understanding that my cross (not a frizzled/silkie cross) is not a Sizzle is correct? And the Cochin x Silkie cross was done in the past, and then further bred to get the silkie feathering back - but they will still throw smooth feathered offspring. Would a current cross of a Frizzled Cochin and Silkie still be called a Sizzle?

Owl is doing great - he hoots at me when I walk by the door of his confinement and I say "Hi Owl". Hopefully I will have them all out together next week. Their palace isn't quite finished yet - but I am working on it. He will have 4 girls now, because I recently got two more girls for him - a Buff Silkie - and a Blue Sizzle. The chicken calculator really shows a mess for the Buff cross - but I won't be showing anybody so it might be interesting to see a few of them. Possibilities of lemon silkies, etc.. in the F2 generation...

From lifting the fluffy girls to move them into their lockup I would say there isn't much meat on them - I don't think I will be raising silkies for their meat quality/quantity. Mostly because they are cute - and funny to watch - and sweet - and great mommies.. yeah - Angels is close.
