California - Northern

I bought a dozen TJs eggs and set 11 because one was cracked. 3 developed and 2 hatched both pullets. Zooweemama has them and at least one of them is laying!
Both are now laying! Confirmed today when we got 2 white eggs. :D We only have 2 white egg layers in our bunch! LOL Yay! I really like them. I wouldn't say they are docile but when mixed with other docile/calm breeds although they are still quite independent they have and will sometimes walk up to use for treats. It took a while to get to that point. They are also maturing to a point that I think once they are done laying they actually might make a decent soup (is that horrible of me? LOL). Butcher and skin and rest and chicken n dumplings. I say a rather cost effective layer honestly. They hardly eat, the prefer to rustle up their own grub, lay are heavy layers of large eggs...easy to obtain (TJs hello!)...I think I will always have a few! We were careful not to name them. LOL

So are any of you venturing down to the Fresno show on the 16th? I haven't seen a thread for it yet.

I am for sure!

Ignore typos! I had internet issues and trying to make up for lost time.

I know most of you just do chickens but we actually do a greater number of ducks. Ours are heavy layers. 11 females - 8-11 eggs every single day. No lights, so far no pausing since September. I know they will soon. I have another batch getting ready to start laying too. The Appleyards I got from a breeder. They are stunning ducks. Very big too. Bigger than my Pekin drake and I thought he was big! They completely camoflage on the pond- which none of our other breeds do although the Harlequins a little bit, the black duck...so so and the Buffs blend in well in the summer because they are almost the same color as our dead yard hehe. (but in a pretty way). I have 1 more small batch of the Appleyards coming and she is tossing in an extra drake for me to grow out and butcher. I am so excited to try one! The drakes are SO quiet. Like whisper quiet- even quieter than my other breeds of drakes. You can barely ever hear them. And they are soft soft soft. They are supposed to start laying around 4 months so I should start to see some eggs soon.

Sorry I went off chicken topic but I love our ducks. :D And our goose lays a couple eggs a week now. 115 or so gram things. Petite for a goose. Yummy!

Spring is almost in the airrrrr!

Oh and Jeff said eggs are going into lockdown tonight. I cannot wait to meet the 16 or so babies my chickens created! I have a brooder set up and everything. Let's do this! hehe

Oh and 3 LF chicks I got from Jeff that we thought at least 1 would be my chick from my last hatch? All 3 are roosters. Not winning. rofl! Good thing my family all love chicken. :p

They will breed true also so if you had a roo you could breed your own. Of course hatching them from the store eggs, you could make fried chicken out of several of the roos(Large Family?) at 4 months.

I am glad that you like them!
We do like them. I love the way their tails fan out. I think I will stick to hatching. Hatching is fun right? haha! And I don't want the hassle of having to pen off breeds for a month at a time (or more). I want to do it every other year for my Orps and the opposite years for my dark egg layers (Marans and/or Welsummers)- the roos can cover EEs/blue egg layers which is nice. I can also sell off the extra TJ chicks I imagine?

I'm not going to be able to make it to Fresno.  My sister is having surgery for breast cancer and I'm flying to Denver that weekend to help with her girls.  Are you showing birds???

I'm sorry we won't get to chat chickens more, but I'm sure your sister will be more comfortable with you there. I will keep her and you in my prayers.

I am finally getting my feet wet and am taking a few birds. My friend Teresa is also going to show for the first time. Should be fun and educational :)

:frow I am for sure!

Looking forward to seeing ya! Is your Mom coming too? It was fun meeting her. Two of the birds I'm bringing are possibly the parents to your egglets.

Good question! I could probably twist her arm, I think if her husband would let her, she'd have some chickens lol. In Lodi I think you can have 3.

It has been raining off and on here this morning.  Just enough to make a muddy mess in the backyard!

It was really windy last night too. I woke uo this morning to puddles everywhere and à few chickens running up to me that shouldnt have been from my layer flock because thé door to thé run blew open. I bet they were happy Lol!

I know I told you i wanted to get Appleyards (They sound tasty!). Where did you get your Appleyards. I really dont want to buy any hatchery stock. :(
