That's what I'm waiting for.

The eggs are from Wisher1000 and are a test hatch. She is experimenting with packing and shipping eggs.

I am getting BA eggs a the end of March from Here: http://hollyoakranch.com/ They are from three unknown lines and may actually be from an importation of the highly productive BAs that were originally imported into the US pre 1940. Those were lost to history but one importation was into California by someone with Deep Pockets. We are very excited about these BAs on the Australorp Thread.

Those are the ones I'll be anxious to see and hear about

There is a place in Sacramento, American Poultry, that will process them. There is a minimum charge so it makes sense to use them if you have something like 18 birds to process. Papa Brooder uses them and has offered to add birds to his order.

I processed 5 of them in January. Last night I cooked Braised Rooster from a Dorkng X(It was a BA or a BR) It was one of the best things I have ever eaten!

My oldest DD that sells meat at a Farmers Market in Mountain View told me to not call the dish Braised Rooster. It was really a 4 month old Cockerel....

It is just so hard for me to kill something with those trusting little eyes. Of course I am certain it would be a little easier if it was a jerk rooster!

Funny when I searched poultry processors Northern California that didn't even come up. I am getting closer and closer to being able to eat my own chickens because the ones that I buy at the store (even the outrageously expensive organic kind) just aren't right. They don't taste good and they have a weird texture.

We had the light on in our potential brooder tonight to see if it would be about the right temperature and we found this:

Genetic question.
I put one of my Mille fleur D'uccle cockerels in with a white D'uccle hen. What do you think I will get? I'm a newbie when it comes to genetics.

I am not really sure what you will get, but this is from a D'uccle website:

You will notice that eggs from out-crossed birds usually have very little trouble hatching. Crossbred birds usually have a very high rate of fecundity. The fresher the egg the better, the usual cut-off time is around two weeks. I have set eggs up to three weeks, but only if they have been kept cool.

I have found this to be true too.

I am not really sure what you will get, but this is from a D'uccle website:

I have found this to be true too.

What does Out-Crossed, and Crossbred mean? Sorry, new to this.

The problem with keeping lines pure is in-breeding. In Chickens that leads to lack of vigor. Chicks do not hatch well and etc. The problem is solved by breeding correctly from generation to generation. Every so often it is good to get new breeding stock from the same line that has not been bred to yours. This year a person with Mohawks in Florida sent chicks to a person in the North. That will add vigor to the line and they should not have defects that would happen if they mixed Nelson with Mohawk.

What you are doing by breeding a white with a Mile Fleur will do the same thing--add vigor. At the same time you will be adding a lot of genetic variation. I think you will get a lot of different looking chicks. If you wanted to keep the lines pure, you would need to find a new ones of each type. IF you are not going to show them or want to keep them pure than go for it!

Thanks, that was really helpful. The two birds I am breeding are from two totally different lines, so I am not inbreeding.
