California - Northern

Ok, I'm not sure about etiquette here, but thanks everyone for the ideas and welcome! Its so neat that people close by like Dunsmuir and Yreka are interested in chickens too!

I grew up in Chicago so I never got to do 4H or anything like that so I'm a little jealous, OR4-H mom.

Sorry about my inability to work the quote thingy quite yet, this board moves quickly.

Welcome Christinab, from the other side of the line.

We had our monthly 4-H meeting last night. I can be the "Crazy Chicken Lady" to my hearts content!

Hey there! I am just down the road from you in Yreka.

No, no no!! so sorry. she is welcome to come pick out another 1 or 2 chicks (No cost!) if you guys are up for it and you think you can get mama to take them in. so, so sad. my kids have cried many tears over lost chickens, even ones they didn't like. :-)

Thank you so much for the offer! The other 3 chicks and mama are doing really well, so I don't really want to mess with things for now. I was planning to ask you if you have any more Ameracaunas (sp?) in the incubator that might hatch around 3/2? We have another broody that is sitting. Once I see how many of those hatch and how she does as a mama, I might want to add to her brood, too. Please let me know if you have a batch that will hatch around then!
on happier new.... collected 76 eggs today!!!!! serious record. The girls are not messing around anymore. I also will have shipped 13 boxes of eggs in the last 2 days. I am so tired of bubble wrap!!! ;-)

WOW! That is a lot of eggs! Congrats!

I only have 9 hens plus 10 super tiny Serama eggs under my broody

I was hesitant to join in the fun, since I felt like I just could not compete with others! Now I feel better!

1 x lavender orp roo
10 x buff orp hens
3 x partridge rock hens
1 x welsummer hen

Total of 15!

but I could not just ignore the 3 sweet little chicks!

Strangely enough, I have been on this forum for almost two years and am only just now getting chickens. Had to fight with city council to get the Yreka ordinance changed to allow hens. But, they are now legal, and I am finally ready.

I grew up in a bedroom community in San Diego and didn't know what FFA was until college at Chico State. Still couldn't tell you what the four "H"s stand for with any accuracy. My first grader has been invited to join the Grenada 4-H, so I should probably learn. :)

You should get your kids involved in it, too. We could live vicariously through them to fill in our 4-H neglected childhoods.
