Little chick is doing great! Getting strong, and is peeping. I will need to do "physical" therapy on her injured wing so it wont "cripple". Thanks for your help!!

I just spent some time updating the list of poultry in my flock at this particular moment in time I have exactly 50 hens/pullets, 3 roosters, one cockerel I am still pretending I don't know, 25 ducks, 2 geese, and 4 turkeys.

All but five pullets and twenty-two ducks have names.

Crap. I just remembered two more pullets.....

I am home briefly--Just got back dropping of 13, 3 day old chicks to Amy Beth and picking up 15 Duck eggs to hatch.

The second Blue Egg layer just hatched and there is another pip! Two out and Two with a Pip.

Wow!

Yes, EEs are Easter Eggers. They are one of the earliest ones to hatch usually. I think Icelandics hatch early too.

The problem is the amount of time in the stinky old hatcher. With most incubators you can only keep 70% humidity going for about 3 days without adding water and opening the incubator to add water can cause the hatching chicks with pips in the eggs to dry out. And then there is the problem of keeping the ones that hatch on day 20 in there until the Marans finish on day 23 or so.

You can do it but it is hard and kind of stressful. It is better ti hatch breeds that hatch at the same time or stagger them with a week between hatching.

The first Blue egg layer hatched 10 minutes ago! The chick looks good too!

Nice! I'm staggering them... I started with 10; the first 2 didn't even pip, the 3rd started to, but quit, 4th & 5th are great & #6 is taking her sweet time zipping. She has a big hole, but seems to be upside down & just keeps poking her beak out :) Emma

...Keeping the humidity in the hatch box has been a little difficult, but I'm struggling with the temps all of a sudden... They've been fine for about 24 hours & they are hatching so something is working :)

I have 5 due on 3/3... we shall see what happens!!

Help? I have a chick that hatched a week ago. She was rough when I got her. Just messy- like she had a rough hatch. She has had chronic issues with pasty butt. Not anyone else- and I have 12 others with her. I am constantly cleaning it. Finally I pulled some of the fur off around her vent just to see if that would help (I know it didn't feel good but I was desperate). It just keeps building up. Today it was bad enough I had to let her soak in a warm bath and clean it off. Well skip back a little bit and let me add that she still has her cord attached. Well while soaking it fell off. NOW she has a HOLE where it was and it looks like FOOD seeping out? Ahhh. Poor thing. I put Blue Kote on it to help with infection but not sure what else to do...any ideas? She is eating and drinking. She is active like the others. Just give her time and stop worrying? I've actually never had to deal with pasty butt- this is my first time and only the one chick.

Side note- all the chicks you gave me Ron are in with my other ones. 26 chicks in 1 brooder. First time I have ever had that many chicks at once time. haha! I'm giving 4 of my own chicks to a friend tomorrow so I will be down to 22. :D haha Thanks so much! I cannot wait wait wait to see what you hatch from my duckies!!

I have nothing on the cord but yougert and electrolytes for pasty butt. I hate that.4

my welsummer's where as thin as a penedesenca. maybe try a Barnevelder as well?
Mine are anything but thin. Not as big as an Orp or Barred Rock, but they are not thin. (well they are when they are young - they fill in when they are older)

This is my rooster, Moose - he's a very big boy:

And my latest pullet in the breeding flock:
