I moved the four Crele Penes that hatched last night to the brooder. I candled the two remaining eggs and one still had a moving chick in it! It looked to be in the correct position so I will leave it alone. No pip but this one will probably hatch at 2:30 am and keep me awake too. Pictures of course! Ok Crele Pene Experts, What do I have?
Not an expert, but I say 1 cockerel, 3 pullets.

I've got chicks coming out of my ears at the moment. Spent the day shifting chicks from indoor brooder to workshop brooder to indoor growout to outdoor growout to moving in with the big kids.

Just in time, so far 22 chicks hatched today, another 4 pipped and a bunch more just being lazy (I hope).

Moving them around is crazy sometimes.

Start off with a Genesis 1588 from GQF. It is one of the best foam incubators and is very easy to use. Get the kit with the auto turner. Later you can move up to one of the bigger or more expensive ones.

Have fun!

I agree....the GQF 1588 incubator works fabulous

Good(?) morning all

Tragedy struck in my chick nursery last night.  All of the chicks are active and eating/drinking except the 5 golden campine girls.  4 of them have died, one is still holding on, but I don't have much hope for her.  I think it would have been better if the hatchery had substituted Lakenvelders for all of them, not just 5.  I called them this morning and left a message, since there is the 48 hour window to alert them to problems, so hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow morning.  Sad, sad, sad..........  :hit

I will see if I can convince Duckie to drive over to Guinda to get some farm-like atmosphere.

Clucks, coos, and drooping feathers

I'm so sorry about your loss, heartbreaking...I have people ask me all the time to ship chicks. I won't do it. I here to many Horror stories..

I have three Hova Bator Genesis and they work great.  Incubator Warehouse sells them for $195 with and turner.   It has a 42 egg capacity.  I recently got a Dickey for incubating and will use the Genesis for hatching.

If you want to forego the store eggs, I am in Novato and have some barnyard mix eggs from my layer flock you can give a try.  I sell them as eating eggs for $5 per dozen so you can buy them for that price.  The layer flock consists of all the breeds I raise and then some so the babies will be mutts since they all live together.

That's how my laying flock is. I have people buy my mixed flock eggs all the time. Many of them are repeat customers. Some of the time they end up with pure eggs. Im alway rotating my pure breeding pens! that means when I add them back to the mixed flock, the eggs are still pure and fertile for awhile.

Im sure your mixed flock Produces some pretty amazing hens...
