Is there anyone in the Gold Country area that raises Buff Orpingtons or Brahmas? My Hubby has his heart set on a nice hefty hen with a sweetie-pie personality like Babs from Chicken Run!

I have a question for you guys…

I've been doing a lot of research recently to try and figure out which type of chickens would be best to get for my situation. I've been getting a lot of conflicting information online.

I'm looking for a bird that is cold hearty, a decent egg layer, and friendly. I guess the importance would be in that order. I definitely want the birds for eggs, but they don't necessary need to be laying like crazy. It really is important that they are cold hardy since the city is so chilly at night. Ideally, they would be friendly as well since we'd like to bring them inside sometimes. :)

Do you guys have any suggestions? So far, it seems my best option would be Buckeyes but they seem to be hard to find.
I think you could use any. it snows here and my heat loving breeds do fine.
maybe a Sweedish flower hen or basque though? You need good air circulation in your coop with the fog and humidity. maybe a open coop Or open in the front and back on top with hardware cloth or stucco wire

Welcome!! I'm in Redding...I totally 'get' the north/south thing. hehe With your screen name do we have another photographer in our midst? :D

Oh yes! My avatar is my own work. One of our friend's rooster who modeled for me

Sorry I've been MIA and won't get to comment on all the exciting goings ons around here. We've been spending most of the day out in the garden with all the chicks (and ducklings). I love how happy they are outside, scratching and dust bathing and pretending to be grown up chickens. It's so cute.

I'm newer here, so sorry if this has been covered, but I was wondering if people would share pictures of links to their chicken setups. I'm especially interested to see people who have large flocks.

Busy hatching times!
I did a test hatch of a few EEs and threw in a dozen fertile eggs from Safeway on a whim.
Well, all the fertile EEs hatched nicely. And 4 of the Safeway eggs have hatched. Five more are rocking and peeping inside the eggs.

Any idea as to what kind of chicks these are??? Their egg carton says "Rock Island".. I'm thinkin' they're polka-dot plymouth rocks...

Those are some very mice pens Deb. I want to build some like your 6 pen row. Thays very effficient.

Ill take some pictures tomorrow of my setup for you @Deerling

Ive seen PapaBrooders setup in person and it is very impressive. And Cheyl also has a beautiful setup as well.
Im also curious to see more of everyones coops or pen setups.
