California - Northern

Thank you again for everyone's heits ith Balthazar. He seems the same today, I saw him eating but he seems sleepy and is ignoring treats. Added vitamins to their water and hoping for the best. Realistically I thought we would lose some, which is why we ordered so many in the first place. We may be looking at getting rid of up to 10 as they get old. Anyone around here think they might be interested in brown egg layers? They're all so sweet, it will be hard.

We decided to give it a go with Guineas, and I think we'll try and hatch them ourselves. Chronic Lyme disease just scares me too much, and we can't go on over half our property for fear of ticks. I just placed my order for the HovaBator 1588 with automatic turners with GQF and am SOOO excited.
Thanks for the update, i was wondering how he is doing. I'm still sending healthy thoughts his way.

Yeah for guineas! I've been tempted to try them as well..., just need to slow the chicken math rate for my DH's comfort level!

Quote: Woohoo for enabling hubbies! Mine would say the same thing, we are so lucky!

Btw I'm posting this from my tablet so the formatting/text may be a bit off, it keeps jumping the curser around on me. Grrr

We had a big scare this morning, around 11am my DH just happened to look out the window and saw an adolescent bobcat slinking up the driveway.
ep.gif
He was going straight for the chickies who were about 20 yards away. We ran him off and gathered the girls in the coop. No more free range time unless I'm sheparding them! We will build a run now but I really didn't want to NEED one!!! Gah.

Who knew that living in the woods and having fat fluffy tasty treats running around all day would attract predators! I am just so thankful that we happened to catch the situation before any birdies got hurt.

I desperately need some colored eggs lol
Funny, I was going to say now you need some blue and green eggs to compliment the tans and browns

I love how the blue/green eggs look mixed with them. I stagger them in the egg cartons and they look so pretty.

I don't think you would find it hard to locate some blue and green egg layers with all these beautiful chickens people on here are raising

That was a close one! Glad it didn't get any of your chickens!! Bobcats are my main predators and they show up all hours of the day. I can't let my chickens free range unless I am right with them. We had one grab a chicken when my husband was out working in the yard within sight of them.

I know right? I need to get some motivation lol

HI! Back from Disneyland and sitting on my porch was my Hova Bator 1588 with egg turners and 30 quail eggs from GQF. Yay! So I am testing your desire for pictures....

. These are boring but I think two others on here may have just ordered the same thing, AND hatching experts, I have a question or two, of course.

Here was the box and the egg box. They came the same day, probably because of the weather shipping delay. They kindly advised me right on the box how long I have before they "expire".

Not as if any of you haven't seen one of these before..... but still for those of you that just ordered yours!

I thought their packaging of the eggs was sort of minimal, but there wasn't a cracked egg in there......

and my second question stems from this notice on the instructions.

My first question is, I know these are quail eggs, (and they kindly shipped the Coturnix eggs instead of the Bob Whites as I asked if they could in the "comments" section of my order online), but they have these eggs in the carton in all different directions. I am assuming I should follow the "shipped eggs" instructions in the hatching 101 thread and let them sit on the counter with the large end up for a day or so? For those of you with quail hatching experience, any input is appreciated.

My second question is..... although I have read and re-read the hatching guidelines, as soon as I read the information on that yellow tag about humidity all the other information I had read just left my brain.... all that was left was a vague recollection that you all use higher humidity rates at lock down than what is said on this little yellow notice displayed with MUCH prominence on the instructions. Comments??? Anyone???

And since my pictures weren't as exciting as live animals, I just posted small pics.
