Zooweemomma-Those duck pictures are so alive and beautiful.

I need some advice........My EE got into the neighbors property and their dog made a chew toy out of her. Mostly missing feathers, but there are a few bleeding spots. I looked her over good, cleaned the open wounds and applied A&D ointment. But when I put her back out with the other girls, some of them have become canibals and were pecking at the bloody spot on her thigh -making it worse. Should I keep her completely seperate from them until she heals or just till it scabs over?

I'm pretty sure she's OK and hopefully learned her lesson.

Separate until the bleeding stops and them put blue kote on the wound. Use Vetericyn after the wound does not need to be covered with Blue Kote.

I hope she is fne!

Do you have Blue Kote? That stuff has been invaluable for me with little blood spots. It disinfects plus turns the area blue. Chickens are attracted to the the site of blood/red.
I don't but maybe should get some at the feed store ASAP. Can you put the Blue Kote on and put them back with the other chickens?
I just looked at the wound again. It looks like the top layer of skin is torn off in a section the size of a 50-cent piece and it is turning yellow (and stinky). Some of the yellow is also open showing the blood. It was't that bad before the other chickens pecked at it.....poor thing. I don't understand why she doesn't like it in a cage by herself rather than risking getting picked on by the other hens? She's pacing back and forth like a tiger.

Quote: Put one friend in with her and put her into a dark room. If you do not have Vetericyn, use triple anti biotic ointment without pain killer. Wash the wound first.

That is a small enough wound that she will recover fine from it.

Poor thing is just anxious from being seperated, but chickens are horrible about blood. I would keep her away from the others, they know the wound is there and may go after it again. It helps with mine to be able to see the others but not in the same enclosure loose. Can you cage her in the coop with the others? Familiar surroundings may be calming for her.

I read about some one who used coco powder. They said they used antibiotic cream, then dusted it with coco powder, to hide the blood. Might work if you can't get to the feed store soon.

Amy, I love this shot.

Yes, separate her for a least a couple of days. Wash the wound, use Vetericyn, then give it a spray of BluKote before putting her back with the flock. Her best best at this point is to be kept quiet and a little extra TLC. Chickens can be brutal with each other.

I hope the situation with the dog is resolved.

How much worse are the chances of haching for shipped eggs Vs. local? If you ship, or buy shipped eggs, how much do you pay for shipping, how do you ship/recieve it? I've heard lots of people having problems with shipped eggs and I'm trying to see if I can find a better way to ship them....

Hatching local eggs is SO much easier than shipped. The PO can really do a number on them. However, shipping usually only runs about $15 to ship 1-2 dozen eggs. Sometimes shipped is the only way you can find what you want or from a specific breeder. It is generally worth the risk.

Wow you have some seriously lovely birds!! The project ones are looking nice!

Thank you, Everyone for the suggestions. I took Amy's and Ron's suggestion about the Blue Kote. Fortunately I live 2 minutes from the Rio Linda feed store (WE FINALLY MOVED TO THE COUNTRY!

) and bought the spray bottle of Blue Kote. Both Ebony (and me) look like we smeared blueberries on us. It covered her raw patch real good, but somehow it got on my fingers too. I'll keep her seperate a few days in a covered 2'X4' tractor since that's all I have. She can still see the back pasture where everyone else is free ranging and I think that is what is driving her crazy. I probably shouldn't let her in the coop at night either? I'll try to borrow a cage and put her in the shed or garage. I hope she heals quick too.
