but re: every other activity being planned to accommodate watching the tournament. Did he go to St. Vincent? Lots of SVHS kids end up at SMC and two of our players, Stephen Holt and Paul McCoy are from up in Portland. Hope that convinces him to cheer for them. However, as long as he doesn't root for Gonzaga he's OK with me...kidding, sorta.

I hope you have fun at the Red Bluff show....are your kids participating? I identify with your user name...was a 4-H kid from 9-18 and a 4-H mom until high school sports became a bigger factor for my girls.

A couple may have been created. They are with the Farmer in Winters. One day he would like to meet you. He was very impressed with the ducklings.

I am so thrilled they all went happy and healthy to someone who likes ducks. And glad you had a such a stellar hatch!

Today is a wet chicken day. lol Bedraggled Orps are so funny. All my chicks are in the run, damp but otherwise ok.

Broody Question:

Betty seems so have just about finished up with her chicks (maybe they are 5 weeks old now?). They seem to be on their own for the most part. She is laying eggs again. They panic at night when she hops up on to the roost and the chicks are stuck down below. We grab her off and stuff her in the broody bin with them but I am thinking we should respect what she is doing and stuff them in their broody bin and let Betty rejoin the flock? During the day they occasionally rejoin her but she doesn't really seem to look after them much. She taught them all the best hiding places and they stick together in a 10 chick group and free range together and when they see birds- they run to all the hides mama taught them. Sound about right for a free ranging broody and babies?

Silkie/Sizzle question. Mine are all about 11 weeks old now. About another month or so and I should be able to tell gender? Or should I be able to tell now?

I was stuck going to Rainbow Girls as a kid. We lived in the city of Dorris when I was a kid and my Mom wasn't an animal kind of person. My daughter will be entering 5 birds in the youth show, she gets that glazed look in her eyes when I talk chicken to her, but she still has the interest so I try to encourage her. She now wants doves/pigeons.

I don't have to worry about sports taking a priority with her, boys-whole other matter. She does have some common sense ao I'm not to worried. I do like her boyfriend, good kid, and compliments her personality well.

I can't remember the name of the school Eric went to, that would have been in the late '60's and early 70's. His family moved up to Magalia for the last few years of HS. All his sisters still live in Novato and Santa Rosa.

Good question! I have a broody hen, and her adopted babies (4 weeks old). She seems to be letting them get farther and farther away, but she still calls to them if she finds something good to eat. She sits on them in the nesting boxes at night. I was wondering when chickens decide their babies are old enough to be without them. At that point, is the broody still nice to them, or do they treat them the same as any other chicken?

My Silkie still hangs out with her babies, but she doesn't call them and she roosts with the others at night. I do have a broody box/nesting area where some littles go to sleep at night, so if they are cold they will learn where to go. I also have seen a momma teach the little ones to roost - and come back down if they just stand there yelling. Let them either learn to roost or go in the box by themselves to sleep ... otherwise you may be picking them up for a loooong time...

Man did I just have a long drawn out hatch!! I had chicks hatch on day 20 through day 23 I attribute it to the power failure and egg cool down for that hour. The last chick had to be helped out and was in rough shape but is just fine this morning All but one of the 17 eggs hatched. I have extra chicks if anyone is interested. 4 bantam buff Brahma (show potential) 2 bantam blue laced red Wyandottes (one blue/one splash~ show potential) 2 LF black laced red Wyandottes (Foley x Catt lines) and 2 EEs (turquoise/blue egg layers) available. Aww.... Little cuties. More boys or one of each this time? They sure have stout legs. It looks like your gorgeous girls gave me one egg that is developing. Too bad there wasn't at least one more but it was a longshot after the rooster moved out. Maybe the Marans pullet egg will hatch and make her a friend since the other five were clear. My Ovascope comes Friday. Yippee! e Thank you thank you thank you Candy. I love my beautiful Black Laced girls. They are awesome and doing great. Howdy to the Group. Sorry for lurking and only rarely poking my head up. It's a great group for help and encouragement and I have lots to learn.My brain is pretty fried after I've done my email for all the dogs Groups and clubs. One day I'll remember to stop volunteering for stuff. Whew!
