Yesterday, I purchased eight 5 ft x 16 ft cattle panels off of craigslist! Score! We were going to use them for fencing at the farm but then I saw a BYCer's photo of his hoop coop. Would these work for breeding pens with just some slight modifications? We are not planning on breeding year around so will use them in the winter for quarantine facilities, grow out pens, rooster pens, etc. Any suggestions on modifications?

I think they would. Some have had problems with rain getting into them. Likely the direction they face would be a factor. Also, Make sure the tarp is secured well for wind.

I like it!

ditto or extend the tarp to the front and leave the front open.
You can also price pond liner. It will cost much more than a tarp but will last longer.
Or corrigated roofing . start at the bottom on both sides and work up. when you get to the top put a peace over the seam. the vinyl type is best and will last for 20 years or more

Watch it for now. Too much opening of the lid can hurt the others. Make sure he is breathing and not struggling too much. They can drown from the amber liquid so make sure not too much is there and clean if he is having trouble.

Good job!
Now that the membrane is gone there doesn't seem to be much extra liquid at all. I'll be keeping an eye on him throughout the day.

This is quite stressful being a first-timer but the wisdom shared by everyone in this thread gives me the courage to conquer my squeamishness. I can't thank everyone enough for their help!

Score! I love craigslist! And that hoop coop looks adorable!

Update, egg #5 has pipped! So far 5 of the 7 ameraucana eggs have had action, nothing from the buffington or grocery store eggs yet...

Thanks! The incubator drama updates will be taking a break from ~noon to 4pm as the host will be joining grandma-in-law on a "high tea".

I knew that when I agreed to do the tea on the scheduled hatch day that something would come up, but I also knew that I would need to get out of the house to get a change of scenery from incubators!

I just had an "Ah ha!" moment from this comment. Every Hatch-a-long in which I've participated until THIS one has been while I was still working. I would be all anxious at work on Hatch Day, wondering how things were going without my presence. I'd come home to hatchlings in the 'bator, so obviously things usually went quite well without my doing anything. :/ (I have intervened with one or two struggling chicks, but the majority of the chicks hatched perfectly fine without me hovering over the incubator.) I think I'm gonna have to go wine tasting or sumpin' next Saturday and Easter. Any eggs unhatched Sunday night and April 1st will have to experience my angst, I guess.
