Hmm, one of our Buff Orpingtons (almost five weeks old) seems to be going downhill fast. They all seemed fine yesterday and this morning when I took them outside she looked pale compared to her sisters. Then I noticed her off by herself kind of puffed up. I held her and she was very docile. Too docile, you know what I mean? I went out later and same thing. I brought her inside to make her and egg and asked my daughter to hold her - Clementine made a "nest" out of a play pot for her and the chicken is just sitting quietly in the middle of the living room in it, not peeping, not getting up. Clearly not a good sign. I'm worried about her, obviously, but I'm also worried about the rest of the chickens getting whatever is ailing her. What should I be looking for/doing? We didn't get them vaccinated. They were on medicated feed (just went through one bag and then switched to unmedicated. They get scrambled eggs a few times a week and go outside almost every day. They always have chick grit in their food. The people who lived here before us had chickens, but that was over a year ago. Our chickens can go where those chickens were. They had turf in their brooder starting when they were little. Help!

It does sound like Cocidiosis. Treat with Corid and make sure they all drink it. Dip their beaks into it if they you do not see them drinking.

Use 20% soluble powder
Mix 1/4 tsp per quart. Once mixed, it is good for 2 days
Give it to them as the only source of water for 5 days
Give them another course at half strength for another 5 days

Some breeds are more susceptible to Coci than others. Luckily they recover quickly. Yes, treat them all. The medicated feed does not cure it. It is supposed to allow them to build resistance.

Keep us posted!

Thank you so much, Ron. Going to get some now. Do you know if I should treat/worry about the ducks? They share outdoor space with the chickens.

I do not think the ducks need to be treated now. Start with the chickens. Zooweemama may have a better answer?

I hope your baby will be better soon.

hey everyone,
I'm still sick but wanted to drop by and say hello while I am actually awake.
Question about incubating. I am running the bator empty right now (has water but no eggs). it all is in working order BUT I am still fiddle farting with the temps to get it between 99-100. At night it dips down to 98- is this a problem? There is going to be natural fluctations no matter what room I put the bator in. I have my therm set to 68 (we had it off and the house would get 62-65 degrees but I figured this would not be good for the bator so plan on making sure my house temp doesn't get too below 68). But during the day my house can warm up between 70-76 (heater is off) and I am not turning the a/c on to maintain a constant 68 lol.

So questions:

1. How much fluctation is normal and ok?

2. Is it normal to fiddle with the therm occasionally to adjust for the rising day temps/cool night temps?

3. When does a temp become dangerously too low to negatively impact a hatch? For a length of time?

4. When do you add the eggs? When the bator is preheated OR add the eggs then turn bator on?

5. When you first put the eggs in- do you leave them alone untouched for how long before they are 'set'?

6. Candling...I have read SO many different answers with when to candle. At what intervals are best? Some day start at 7 and some say 10...

7. Candling & Temps: When I need to candle I am opening and closing the bator- this is def going to cause the temp to dip. Getting in the bator once a day or every other day or every few days - which is ok?

8. My current humidity is 40%. Is this too high to set eggs? Should I leave it dry until after they are set? Leave it dry until lockdown?

My eggs have been sitting on my counter, air cell up the entire time. Will I need to prep the eggs in any way before popping them in? These are my eggs not shipped, and none were cooled in the fridge.

Thanks so much guys!
Goose eggs are supposed to be the hardest eggs to hatch, good luck! I have also heard they need to be on their SIDE and not in a turner, and need to be misted and cooled. I do not know what humidity they need, however.
Thanks, chiqita! I separated the Jumbos so he only has 2 girls. I vent- sexed them. Do you know of anybody that is selling quail in norcal? I'm getting at least one egg/day for 6 girls :/ I need some more. Thanks!
I have quail ( but I have a waiting list right now, its madness) deb has quail, but there is a place in Angles camp that sells them to and has a ton that might be closer to grass valley? not sure.. Don't know if anyone has sexed quail however, if that is what you need. Quail are addictive I love them.

Congratulations on all the babies! I would ooh and ahh more, but Ill just start coughing and infect you all. Glad everyone is well and will be back later.

Make sure the ones that are already sick drink. if they are not feeling well, they wont drink enough to cure them.

You know what might work for the sides is shade cloth. My husband made some panels to hang on the sides of my lower chicken pen. It has a roof, but the rain would blow in. When the weather is good I keep them rolled up and when it rains I can lower them like a shade. They let some air through for ventilation but keep the rain out.

Oooh! Another good idea! Thank you!

Quote: Yup, #5 hatched while I was out. The orpington pipped too! Nothing from the grocery store eggs yet. Now to get DS to bed and then help out upside-down charlie (his nickname). I'll add pics later.

OK, checked for at least a pip before leaving for work around 11am and I found one! And it's one of the Blue Copper Marans eggs!

First I thought it was a scratch on the egg and then the egg moved! Finally got the flashlight to the right angle and could tell it was a pip. I don't get off until 6!

Threadgeek,
When I was assisting I used a q-tip to moisten the outer membrane and the shell. I also had my flashlight so I could see any veins. I was in a bathroom so I could swap out the warm wet paper towels. I also found tweezers really handy, I could use them to crush small portions of shell if I couldn't see where the veins were.

Okay, here's the new toy..........

First the 80# box arrived. You can see the old setup, along with the brooder where the chicks spend their first week so I can watch them.

Got it set up!

A peek at the top shelf, you can't see it actually holds 7 rows of eggs.

I've already got all three shelves filled, with a half tray of overflow in the bottom that need hand turning.................(but one whole shelf locks down this next week).
