3 chicks finally hatched this morning, 1 Polish (with the biggest knot I've ever seen) and 2 of the Marans. 7 (at least, its hard to tell) have pipped. But I have one concern. The first chick to pip yesterday is still just peeking out the hole and I can see he's upside down. He pecks at the membrane but will he be able to get out? My last hatch I had one pip and the wrong end and I ended up having help it but this one is pipped in the right spot but I can tell his beak is upside down. What do you think? Do I need to help him. He pipped yesterday around 10am.

Also, the three that are hatched are ready to come out but I have three eggs with open pipped holes. The others are just the first crack. Is it safe to quickly take them out? I figured I'd wait to see if I had to intervene with the one before I took them out and do it at the same time.

That sounds like one of the mal positions--Head stuck under the wing. You should start helping him if he is sticking his head out.

At the same time, move the chicks out. The Brinsea recovers humidity very quickly.

Hoping for a good hatch!

There will be residue in the eggs for 21 days after the last treatment. The problem with eating them is drug resistance when using tetracycline if you get sick. Another reason would be if the person eating the egg is allergic to tetracycline.

The eggs will not hurt you otherwise. Of course you could feed the eggs to the chickens. If you really needed to use a couple of those eggs....

Yep! It was a big egg... today is all clear! phew!!!

I need advice... I'm a licensed nurse who is burnt out after 14 years of taking care of humans. Is there any profession involving birds that my nursing license would work towards? I need a change.

Quote: OK, so another just hatched, do I need to let him dry a bit or leave him in, move the dry ones out and getting the malpositioned egg at the same time?
Good luck with the malpositioned guy!

Here's a couple pics. First with some cuteness... the 8 happy chicks napping in my lap

And here's one of the grocery store chicks!

I have 2 grocery chicks so far with a third zipping. A fourth is pipped on the wrong side... Ack!

If he needs help, can someone please clarify the overall goal? Is it to remove shell only, the papery membrane, or all of the membranes??? I'm guessing it is to remove the shell and papery membranes for one half of the egg???

Ok, I know I sound like a dummy.... but what are grocery store hatching eggs, and where do you get them? My store doesn't sell hatching eggs.... lol

Whole foods and Trader Joes sells fertile eggs. They will hatch!

OH, and can I remove that white thing? It would sure make more room in there.
If you have the auto humidity pump you need to leave the paper in the hood. That is what the drops of water drip onto and control the humidity.

I usually wait until right after a chick has hatched (moisture from its body elevates the humidity) to open the incubator and take chicks out. This last hatch was so tight in my Octagon 20 (17 chicks) that I was opening it quite a bit and all of the eggs hatched but one. That is the nice thing about the Octagon 20 is that its temps and humidity recover quickly. I did have one chick that was not positioned right (head was not under its wing) and I ended up helping it out.

The proper position for a hatching chick is with its head "under" its "right" wing.

Good luck with the rest of your hatch!

Vet Tech might work. You would have to check to see how much of our current education will count towards the degree and then there is certificate training.

Good Luck!
